The much loved OTT series ‘Chumbak’ from the makers of ‘Khichdi’, ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’, ‘Baa Bahu Aur Baby’ are returning with Part 2 on October 1, bringing back its colourful ensemble of characters and the five interconnected families living in Chembur’s fictional Chumbak Colony. From Neena Gupta and Deven Bhojani’s Rajni and Kuku to Sumeet Vyas, Manasi Parekh, Arjun Bijlani and Helly Shah, here’s a guide to the characters and families at the centre of the Indian comedy.
The Merchants: Neena Gupta and Deven Bhojani
Kuku Merchant, played by Deven Bhojani, is a retired pilot and one of the most recognisable members of Chumbak Colony. His colourful history includes accidentally landing a plane meant for Bangalore in Mangalore, an incident that reportedly cost him his job.Kuku lives with dementia, which frequently creates complications in his relationship with his wife Rajni, played by Neena Gupta. Rajni is a sari designer and the neighbourhood’s dependable matriarch. Although she is frustrated by having to look after Kuku, she continues to care deeply for him and remains the person residents turn to for advice.Their son Nikhilesh, played by Priyal Gupta, lives in the US while waiting for his green card and receives updates about the family from afar.
The Kejriwals: Sumeet Raghavan and Sandeepa Dhar
Dharmendra Kejriwal, played by Sumeet Raghavan, is a popular actor known for portraying women characters on a talk show. His professional persona is very different from the image of his wife Kiran, played by Sandeepa Dhar, who works as a flight attendant and often acts as the voice of reason in the family.The couple’s 12-year-old daughter Piya is played by a young actor and is presented as a confident child who stands by her father despite the judgement he faces because of his performances.
The Khannas: Manasi Parekh and Sumeet Vyas
Priyanka Khanna, played by Manasi Parekh, is a homemaker and mother of two boys. She is energetic, outspoken and constantly involved in the lives of people around her with her catchphrase ‘Boliye Boliye’ now a fan favorite across social media platforms.Her husband Aditya “Adi” Khanna, played by Sumeet Vyas, is an advertising executive whose understated personality provides a contrast to Priyanka’s high-energy nature. His dry humour and calm outlook become an important part of their family dynamic.Their sons Ruhaan and Vedant, played by Vidhaan Sharma and Vidvaan Sharma, respectively, add another layer of mischief to the household.
The Taraporewalas: Amyra Dastur, Anant V. Joshi and Delnaaz Irani
Hutoxi Taraporewala, played by Amyra Dastur, is a writer documenting the lives of the people around her in her book The Chumbak Chapters. She is outspoken, sarcastic and unafraid to express her opinions.Her mother-in-law Gulshan, played by Delnaaz Irani, is equally strong-willed. Her loud observations and sharp remarks frequently put her at odds with Hutoxi.Caught between the two is Freddy Taraporewala, played by Anant V. Joshi. A home chef and caterer, Freddy is deeply loyal to his family, while his love for food and humour provides a lighter side to the household.
The Oberois: Helly Shah and Arjun Bijlani
Twinkle Oberoi, played by Helly Shah, is a model who lives a privileged lifestyle and has a tendency to remain in her own world. Despite her sometimes self-absorbed nature, she is there for her friends when they need her.Her husband Micky Oberoi, played by Arjun Bijlani, is a cardiac surgeon who is devoted to his wife. Their relationship forms another comic dynamic within the colony.Twinkle’s father Nari Ravjiani, played by Atul Kumar, is a successful hotelier who remains suspicious of Micky. His larger-than-life personality and fierce protectiveness towards his daughter add another source of tension to the family.
‘Chumbak’ Part 1 ending explained: Ruhaan’s disappearance and Kiran’s growing suspicions
The eighth episode of ‘Chumbak Part 1’ ends with several storylines deliberately left unresolved, setting up stage for Part 2. The biggest twist revolves around Ruhaan, who initially appears to have run away from home after leaving a note. The family panics, but he eventually returns and reveals that he had been meeting a lawyer named Mandar Gaitonde. Aditya knew about his whereabouts and had agreed to keep the meeting a secret. Ruhaan then hands Priyanka a legal notice, suggesting that the family conflict is far from over.Meanwhile, Kiran begins connecting several seemingly unrelated incidents involving Dharmendra and Mickey after Tillottama mentions finding a swimsuit in a garbage bag. Kiran recalls Rajni’s account of seeing Mickey in a jacuzzi with a woman and her own discovery of Dharmendra with wet trousers, raising fresh questions about what the men may have been hiding. Hutoxi’s narration then takes the story into Chapter Nine without resolving these mysteries. The episode therefore ends on multiple cliffhangers, with Ruhaan’s legal confrontation, Kiran’s suspicions and the unresolved relationships becoming key threads for Part 2.
‘Chumbak’ Part 2 release date and streaming details
The second part of ‘Chumbak’ consists of eight episodes and will premiere on Netflix on October 1. The returning ensemble includes Neena Gupta, Deven Bhojani, Arjun Bijlani, Helly Shah, Manasi Parekh, Sumeet Vyas, Sandeepa Dhar, Sumeet Raghavan, Anant V.
