Meet Austin Applebee, the 'superhuman' teen who swam for four hours to save his family after they were swept out to sea

On a Friday in late January, a family holiday on the Western Australian coast turned into a fight for survival. Austin Appelbee, his mother Joanne, 47, his brother Beau,12, and his sister Grace,8, were using kayaks and paddleboards hired from their hotel around noon when rough seas and wind began dragging them away from land.By evening, the whole world knew the name of the eldest child as Austin,13, swam four kilometres through rough water to raise the alarm, and police credited him with saving the lives of his mother and siblings, who had drifted 14 kilometres from Quindalup.

The swim that almost defied belief

Austin first tried paddling the kayak toward shore, but it began taking on water, so he abandoned it as reported by CBS NEWS and swam the rest of the way. By one account, he kept his life jacket on for the first two hours, then decided it was holding him back and ditched it for the final two. “The waves are massive and I have no life jacket on. … I just kept thinking ‘just keep swimming, just keep swimming,'” Austin said. “I didn’t think I was a hero. I just did what I did”, he told BBC.To stay calm, he leaned on small, happy thoughts. At one point he found himself thinking about Thomas the Tank Engine, choosing gentle images over frightening ones. He also said prayer and faith helped keep him positive. The swim wasn’t the end of it. Once he reached land, Austin still had to run another mile down the beach to reach his family’s phone and call emergency services. He then passed out from exhaustion.

    A mother’s hardest choice

Behind Austin’s swim was a decision no parent wants to make. Joanne later described telling her son to try for shore and get help as one of the hardest choices of her life. “One of the hardest decisions I ever had to make was to say to Austin: ‘Try and get to shore and get some help. This could get really serious really quickly,'” she told Australian Broadcasting Corp. The three remained in the water for up to 10 hours before rescue. A helicopter eventually found them clinging to a paddleboard. Joanne was widely praised too. Her calm leadership kept the younger children afloat and gave Austin a clear mission.

    Recognition and life afterward

Austin’s story spread fast, and honours followed. According to News24, he is an Army Cadet with the 50 Army Cadet Unit (Midlands) in Perth, and he received the Australian Army Cadets Gold Commendation for his bravery. The cadets’ commander said Austin showed courage and determination expected of people far older.A boy of 13 years showed courage and resilience in the utmost need of his life. This kind of bravery needs confidence and dedication. He saved his family and mentioned that he didn’t feel like a hero while rescuing his family tells a lot about a kid of his age. Austin’s story will always resonate along with the other children who will be choosing valour in moments of survival.
