Rs 2.5 lakh for 5 nights in Goa? Man compares festive holiday costs with Bali, Vietnam and Krabi and asks why foreign trips can sometimes cost the same

Rs 2.5 lakh for 5 nights in Goa? Man compares festive holiday costs with Bali, Vietnam and Krabi and asks why foreign trips can sometimes cost the same

A festive holiday is supposed to be a time to relax, but for many travellers, planning the trip can bring a different kind of stress: the price. During peak travel periods, hotel rooms and flights at popular Indian destinations can become significantly more expensive, prompting some travellers to question whether an international holiday can sometimes offer better value. That question recently sparked a discussion on X after a user named Parimal compared the cost of a luxury five-night holiday in Goa with trips to destinations such as Bali, Vietnam and Krabi. Sharing his thoughts online, Parimal wrote, “As a student of mathematics, I have a genuinely stupid question. Why does domestic tourism in India become more expensive exactly when everyone wants to travel?” His comparison focused largely on the cost of accommodation and flights during festive periods.

Why festive holidays can make domestic travel expensive

According to Parimal, a five-night stay at a five-star property in Goa, the Northeast or another popular Indian destination can cost between Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh for the room alone during a festive period. He also pointed towards the cost of reaching these destinations. “Then domestic flights decide to participate and casually become 2–3× more expensive,” he wrote. The combination can make a domestic holiday surprisingly expensive, particularly for travellers looking for luxury accommodation during periods of high demand. However, these figures should be viewed as an individual traveller’s comparison rather than a universal price rule. Hotel rates and airfares vary widely depending on the exact dates, property, room category, booking window and destination. Still, the broader question is familiar to many Indian travellers. Popular destinations often see a sharp rise in demand around festivals, long weekends and school holidays. When more people compete for a limited number of hotel rooms and flights, prices can rise.

Bali and Vietnam enter the comparison

Parimal then compared the cost of a luxury stay in India with popular international destinations. “A comparable luxury resort in Vietnam / Bali / Krabi can cost around Rs 40–60k for 5 nights,” he wrote. He acknowledged that international flights can cost more but argued that the overall expense can sometimes come close to what a traveller might pay for a luxury domestic holiday. “International flights are obviously more expensive, but even after paying the extra airfare, you can still end up paying almost the same overall cost if planned smartly,” he said. He summed up his frustration with another comparison: “Pay Rs 35k a night to look at a swimming pool in Goa / pay Rs 10-15k a night to look at a swimming pool in Bali? I genuinely want to understand the economics here.”The comparison does not mean that every Bali, Vietnam or Krabi trip will be cheaper than Goa. Flights, visas where applicable, local transport, food, travel insurance, currency exchange and other expenses also contribute to the final bill. For some travellers, however, cheaper accommodation abroad can make the total cost look competitive, especially when international flights are booked early or during promotions.

Social media debates demand, supply and alternatives

The post soon attracted different views on why travel within India can become expensive during peak periods. One user argued that luxury tourism has become expensive but pointed out that affordable travel remains possible. Another highlighted demand and supply, noting that prices can fall sharply in destinations such as Rajasthan during summer or Goa during the monsoon when fewer people travel. The user also pointed towards infrastructure and airport capacity as factors that can influence airfares. Others suggested looking beyond India’s most popular tourist destinations. One commenter questioned why travellers automatically choose Goa and suggested places such as Visakhapatnam, arguing that lesser-known destinations can offer attractive experiences at lower prices. That may be one of the simplest lessons from the debate. A festive holiday does not necessarily have to mean choosing between an expensive Indian luxury resort and an international trip. Travelling on different dates, choosing less crowded destinations, booking earlier, considering mid-range accommodation and comparing the complete cost rather than just hotel prices can significantly change the calculation. Ultimately, Parimal’s post raises a question rather than providing a definitive answer: when peak-season prices rise sharply at India’s most popular destinations, should travellers simply pay the premium, explore lesser-known places or look overseas for better value? For many holidaymakers, the answer may depend less on geography and more on timing, planning and expectations.
