In 2015, a Canadian aunt helped launch a hockey fundraiser inspired by her nephew’s cancer diagnosis; an event that raised C$10,000 in its first year went on to collect over C$1 million across a decade
For Andernacht, the tournament has become an example of what can happen when people turn personal hardship into collective action.

A hockey tournament born from a family cancer diagnosis has grown into a decade-long fundraising effort, turning a group of friends, a few teams and a shared love of the game into a million-dollar community movement. For Canadian organiser Dianne Andernacht, what began as a deeply personal experience eventually became a way to bring hockey players together for something much bigger than competition, states a release by the Canadian Cancer Society.

When cancer came close to home

Andernacht’s connection to cancer became personal in 2008, when her three-year-old nephew, Aidan, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Hockey was already woven into the family, with her brother and nephews playing the sport. Around the same time, Andernacht joined an adult beginner hockey league, states the release. The support her family received from the hockey community during Aidan’s illness stayed with her. It also encouraged her to become involved in Canadian Cancer Society fundraising activities, looking for ways to turn that community spirit into something lasting. The idea for a hockey tournament eventually took shape among Andernacht and four friends from her beginner league. Each had experienced cancer within their own families, giving the group a shared reason to turn their favourite sport into a fundraising platform, the release adds.

    Hockey with a bigger purpose

In 2015, the five friends launched Let’s Body Check Cancer, combining a hockey tournament with fundraising for cancer-related causes. The concept was straightforward: gather teams, play hockey and use the event to raise as much money as possible, the release states.Andernacht took responsibility for fundraising and coordinating volunteers, while the wider hockey community helped the event grow. In its first year, eight teams took part and the tournament raised C$10,000. There was no elaborate blueprint for what came next. The fundraiser expanded largely through word of mouth, with players and supporters helping spread the idea through hockey networks. Each year brought more participation and greater fundraising momentum, the release adds.

    From C$10,000 to a million-dollar milestone

Over the decade since its launch, Let’s Body Check Cancer has evolved far beyond its modest beginnings. The fundraiser has now generated more than C$1 million, demonstrating how a small community initiative can grow when people continue returning to the cause. The numbers tell only part of the story. At the centre of the event has always been the personal connection that inspired it, particularly Andernacht’s relationship with Aidan. In the early years, her team competed as Team Aidan, keeping his story at the heart of the tournament. At 10, Aidan returned to the event to drop the ceremonial puck. Years later, at 19, he joined the team created in his honour and scored a goal himself.

    More than a game

For Andernacht, the tournament has become an example of what can happen when people turn personal hardship into collective action. The event’s growth also reflects the distinctive power of sports communities, where friendships formed around a shared game can extend into fundraising, volunteering and support for families facing difficult circumstances. What began with five friends and eight hockey teams has become a decade-long tradition and a C$1 million-plus fundraising achievement. The ice may be where the event happens, but its real legacy has been built through the community gathered around it, the report concludes.Images Courtesy: istock and Canadian Cancer Society
