A New Hampshire groundskeeper lived in an empty trailer and mowed lawns; after his death, town discovered he had donated $3.8 million to support education, health and recreation

A New Hampshire groundskeeper lived a remarkably simple life in a mostly empty mobile home, spending his days mowing lawns and doing odd jobs for residents at a trailer park in the small town of Hinsdale. Geoffrey Holt rarely drew attention to himself and was often seen riding his lawn mower around town or sitting quietly by a nearby brook. But after his death in June 2023 at the age of 82, residents discovered that the unassuming caretaker had quietly built a multimillion-dollar fortune through investments. Holt’s will left $3.8 million to Hinsdale, a community of about 4,200 people, with instructions that the money should benefit local education, health, recreation and culture.

New Hampshire groundskeeper led a simple life with little interest in wealth

Holt lived at Stearns Park, a mobile-home community where he worked as a caretaker. Residents knew him for wearing threadbare clothes, mowing lawns and travelling around on his mower. His trailer contained very little furniture, and he did not own a television or computer. According to his friend Edwin “Smokey” Smith, Holt seemed to have everything he wanted because he simply did not want very much.Holt had previously worked at a grain mill in nearby Brattleboro, Vermont, and had also taught driver’s education and social studies earlier in his life. He later stopped driving and relied on a bicycle and, eventually, his lawn mower to get around. Mowing was more than a job for him. A therapist who knew Holt said he appeared to see it as a way of being outdoors and providing a service to people he cared about.

    The fortune nobody knew about

Although Holt lived frugally, he had been investing his money for decades. His friend Smith, who later became executor of his estate, knew that Holt’s investments were doing well, but even he was surprised by the size of the fortune Holt had accumulated.Holt’s investments included mutual funds, and he regularly read financial publications. He also spent his money on personal interests rather than an extravagant lifestyle, collecting hundreds of model cars and train sets, books and records. His collection included works related to history, as well as music by composers including Handel and Mozart.

    $3.8m left to the town

Holt died in June 2023, and his will contained a simple but extraordinary instruction: $3.8 million was to go to the town of Hinsdale to benefit the community in education, health, recreation and culture. The gift came as a surprise to many residents who had known him for years but had no idea he had accumulated such wealth.Steve Diorio, who chaired Hinsdale’s selectboard, described the gift as tremendous, particularly because Holt had chosen to leave his fortune to the town where he had spent much of his life. The money was expected to provide a lasting source of support for the community rather than being spent all at once.

How Hinsdale planned to use the money

Rather than immediately spending the entire inheritance, Hinsdale planned to establish a trust through the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and use the investment income to support community projects. At the time the gift was reported, officials estimated that the fund could generate about $150,000 a year.Residents suggested several possible uses, including repairing the clock on Town Hall, restoring local buildings and purchasing a new ballot-counting machine. Another idea was to create an online driver’s education course, an especially fitting possibility given Holt’s earlier work teaching students to drive.

A legacy that reflected how he lived

Holt’s sister, Alison, said her brother had always been frugal and did not need much to be happy. She recalled that their father had emphasised saving and investing, values that Holt appears to have carried throughout his life.Holt also had a strong connection to Hinsdale. He rarely travelled far and developed friendships within the mobile-home community. After suffering a stroke a few years before his death, he had mobility problems and could no longer mow lawns as he once did. His decision to leave his fortune to the town therefore became a final way of supporting the community where he had quietly lived for decades.
