Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has called for a swift resolution to Manchester City’s long-running financial charges case, admitting that the controversy has raised several questions and affected him personally.Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Carrick said the uncertainty surrounding the case had gone on long enough, stressing that a conclusion would benefit everyone involved in English football.“Very difficult to say in many ways,” Carrick said when asked about the charges against City.“It’s thrown up a lot of questions, some have had answers, some haven’t. As it’s still ongoing, and we don’t know how long it’s going to go, there’s only so much I can say.”The former United midfielder, who spent 12 years at Old Trafford between 2006 and 2018, admitted that the case had a personal dimension for him after experiencing some of the club’s most painful title-race defeats against their Manchester rivals.“Certainly I’ve got my own questions about it, it’s affected me personally in different ways over a period of time. But as the case is going now I don’t know where that stands and how it’s going to end up, so we’ll just have to wait and see,” he added.“What I will say, the sooner it gets sorted I think for everyone’s benefit is essential.”

Carrick reflects on United’s lost title races

Carrick was part of the United side that lost out to City in two Premier League title races, including the dramatic 2011-12 season when United finished level on points with their neighbours but missed out on the title on goal difference.Sergio Aguero’s stoppage-time goal against Queens Park Rangers on the final day secured City’s first Premier League crown and remains one of the competition’s most memorable moments.Asked whether United should be awarded titles they missed out on if the case ultimately goes against City, Carrick said the emotional significance of winning a trophy could not simply be recreated later.“I think regardless of anything, a medal anyway, in any sport in history, I think later on you get the medal and it’s proven at different times,” the Englishman said.“It’s the moment that you strive for to win and achieve in that moment, so the medal here or there, not getting blase about it, but that doesn’t bring the feeling of when you initially win or you don’t win. That’s essentially what we’re all in it for.”An independent commission found City guilty of charges relating to breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules over nine seasons, from 2009-10 to 2017-18, along with three of four charges relating to their failure to cooperate with the investigation. City have denied wrongdoing and lodged an appeal.

United turn focus to Tottenham clash

Carrick’s comments came ahead of United’s Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. United, sitting 12th in the table, will face the bottom-placed side while dealing with several injury concerns.Wing-back Patrick Dorgu is expected to be sidelined for several weeks after picking up an injury during the international break, while defender Noussair Mazraoui is also a doubt.“It’s a bit mixed really through the internationals,” Carrick said. “(Wing back) Patrick Dorgu came off and it looks like he’ll be out probably for a number of weeks.”“(Defender) Noussair Mazraoui came off and took a knock. He’s not quite right yet, we’ll have to see how he is.”Carrick added that Carlos Baleba was improving, while Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Marcus Rashford had resumed limited training. Striker Benjamin Sesko remained further away from a return.
