Never give up! Nic Maddinson’s remarkable journey from testicular cancer and chemotherapy to an unexpected Australia Test comeback

When Nic Maddinson told his four-year-old son August that he was heading to South Africa, the youngster began listing the animals he knew lived there. The family even squeezed in some cricket in the hallway of their Byron Bay home before Maddinson left for what could become one of the most significant chapters of his career. For the left-handed batter, however, the journey back to Australia’s Test team has been about far more than cricket. It has been a story of battling testicular cancer, enduring chemotherapy and finding a new perspective on life before earning an unexpected return to the national set-up.Maddinson discovered a lump last year, and scans revealed testicular cancer. He underwent surgery to remove it, but further tests seven weeks later showed the cancer had spread to parts of his abdominal lymph nodes and lung.At the time, his wife Bianca was pregnant with their second child. She gave up her job as a dentist to care for their toddler, August, while Maddinson underwent treatment. His days became a difficult routine of hospital visits, rest and trying to eat before attempting to sleep again. He completed chemotherapy on July 14, but had to wait another two months before receiving clearance to resume full training. The birth of his second son, Wilder, brought another source of joy as Maddinson began rebuilding his life and cricket career. Having come through the ordeal, he has also urged others to seek medical attention if they notice anything unusual. His return to competitive cricket has been remarkable. Maddinson last played first-class cricket in March 2025, meaning he went 579 days without a match in the format before returning to Australia’s Test set-up. It is the longest such gap for an Australian before a men’s Test match. The call-up itself came as a surprise. When George Bailey, the chair of selectors, rang him, Maddinson initially wondered whether the conversation might concern an Australia A tour of India or another young player.“I thought maybe he was calling me to go to India for the A tour or ask about another young player around because I was a little bit unsure what was going on,” Maddinson said.He admitted he had not believed himself to be close to a Test recall, although the hope of returning had never disappeared.“Obviously didn’t feel like I was that close but still had hopes of maybe one day getting back into a Test squad. So, in terms of motivation, it’s still always been there but yeah definitely a bit of a surprise.”The 34-year-old spent much of the long flight to South Africa processing the news, trying to relax with sleep and films while reflecting on what he described as one of the “craziest” weekends of his life.Despite the lengthy break from first-class cricket, Maddinson said he was confident about his physical conditioning. He had been playing matches and multi-day red-ball games with New South Wales as he worked towards regaining his fitness. His outlook on cricket has also changed since his previous Test appearance against Pakistan at the MCG in 2016. A decade of first-class experience, combined with his health battle, has helped him find greater balance and confidence in his game.“I always felt like I understood the game pretty well but when you look back I feel like you probably don’t know that much,” he said.He believes he has learnt not to force himself into a particular style simply to satisfy selectors or secure his place in the side, instead developing the ability to adapt to different conditions. Now back in the Test environment, Maddinson has been welcomed by teammates who know him from years of playing alongside or against him. His return also reunites him with coach Andrew McDonald, under whom he honed his skills during his time in Victoria. The comeback is already a powerful story of resilience. After cancer treatment, a lengthy absence from first-class cricket and the uncertainty of whether another Test opportunity would come, Maddinson has earned his way back. For August, the trip may be about South Africa’s animals and geography. For his father, it represents something far bigger: a return to the game after overcoming a battle that put life itself into perspective.
