In 2006, Jackie Chan asked fans to help build schools one dollar at a time and promised to match their gifts; six years later, their combined contributions had passed $192,000 for children in rural China

Jackie Chan’s appeal was simple: if fans could spare a dollar, he would match it and put both contributions towards building schools for children in remote parts of China. The “Build a School for a Dollar” project turned small gifts into a shared effort, inviting children and adults around the world to contribute whatever they could. According to the project’s page on Jackie’s Kids Corner, over six years fans donated more than $96,000, and Chan matched their gifts, bringing the combined total to more than $192,000. The money was enough to build several schools in poor and remote areas. The campaign’s idea was modest, but its promise was powerful: no contribution was too small to become part of something larger.

Chan’s promise was to match donations dollar for dollar. A fan who gave one dollar would effectively contribute two, while someone who gave ten dollars would see that gift doubled. The project’s organisers stressed that contributions could come in any amount and from any country. That open invitation helped give the campaign its character. It was not presented as a fundraising drive reserved for wealthy donors. Children could send pocket money, and adults could contribute spare change or a larger sum. The point was participation as much as the size of any single gift. The project was connected to the Dragon’s Heart Foundation, which worked to help children in poor and remote parts of China. Building a school required more than the money raised by fans. The project page noted that a school cost about $75,000, with the Chinese government providing the rest of the construction funding. Chan’s match helped close the gap and make the target more achievable.

    From fan contributions to schools

The campaign began in 2006, asking supporters to help finance school construction through small donations. The fundraising model made the goal easier to understand: if fans together raised $37,500, Chan’s matching donation would bring the total to the $75,000 needed for a school. The project’s early updates showed how the gifts accumulated. In 2008, Jackie Chan’s Kids Corner reported that fans had raised nearly $40,000 in less than two years. With Chan matching their donations, the combined sum had reached the amount needed to finance a school. The initiative did not stop after the first target. Fans continued contributing, and the project page later reported that their donations had passed $96,000 over six years. Chan’s matching gifts brought the overall total above $192,000, enough to build several schools in poor and remote areas. That progress made the campaign more than a one-time appeal. Each new donation helped move the effort towards another school, while the matching promise gave contributors a clear reason to believe their money would have twice the impact.

A global effort with a personal touch

The project page invited supporters to send money in whatever currency they used. A donation did not need to be a US dollar bill, and the appeal welcomed contributions in different amounts. That flexibility helped make the initiative accessible to a global fan base.Supporters also found ways to make the fundraising personal. Jackie Chan’s Kids Corner described fans donating money in place of birthday gifts, while fan gatherings and community events helped raise contributions. In one account, a supporter said friends and family gave to the school project instead of bringing presents. That spirit matched Chan’s broader message about generosity. In an April 2013 diary entry, he recalled asking children around the world to donate pocket money or spare change, even if it was only one dollar. He said he would match every donation and direct the combined funds to charity. For fans, the campaign offered a way to take part in a cause linked to someone they admired. Chan’s fame helped draw attention, but the project’s structure gave people a tangible role: each small gift joined a growing total intended for school construction.

    Building opportunity in remote areas

A school building can represent more than a place to attend lessons. In remote communities, access to education may depend on whether a school exists close enough for children to reach it. A local classroom can give students a regular place to learn, meet teachers and build the foundations for future opportunities. The project’s focus on poor and remote areas of China reflected that practical need. By directing funds towards school construction, the campaign aimed to create lasting infrastructure rather than provide only short-term assistance. The $192,000 figure reported by the project page was a combined amount, including both fan donations and Chan’s matching contributions. It was enough to build several schools, according to the campaign. The project did not claim that donations alone covered every expense. Instead, it described a partnership in which fan gifts, Chan’s match and government construction funding helped make the buildings possible.

    A lesson in giving

The campaign also carried a message beyond its fundraising target. Chan said the project was about teaching people how to give and care, and about bringing people from different places together through a shared effort. Small donations could become a lesson in generosity when they were joined with contributions from thousands of others. That approach helps explain why the one-dollar idea endured. It made philanthropy feel possible for people who might otherwise assume they had too little to offer. The promise to match each contribution also made the impact easy to understand, giving a modest gift a visible role in the larger goal.Six years after Chan first asked fans to help, their donations had exceeded $96,000, and his matching gifts brought the combined amount above $192,000. The campaign turned that sum into funding for several schools in rural China. Its legacy is not just the buildings, but the idea they share: a small act of generosity can grow when people choose to contribute together.
