This habit usually escalates at night, as a person has more free time on hand and seeks closure for unfinished thoughts.

Rehearsal strengthens the memory over time, making it very tough to get over the experience even after the event has finished a long time back.

People read old messages to get closure when the argument gets over without a conclusion.

These messages are evidence for some people to prove that they are right.

Many people use this as an emotional regulation tool, and it works as a retrospective comeback to support one’s perception about themselves.

This habit is due to nostalgia, a sense of continuity and social connection.

Sometimes it’s to revisit how much you have changed.
