If Ajanta feels like stepping into an ancient art gallery, the Ellora Caves feel like discovering a city carved into a mountainside. Spread across the Charanandri hills, this complex contains 34 caves representing Buddhist, Hindu and Jain traditions, created between the 6th and 12th centuries.

The star attraction is the Kailasa Temple, also known as Cave 16. This magnificent temple is carved out of a single mass of rock, with artisans removing material from the surrounding cliff to reveal a monumental structure. Its courtyards, pillars, sculptures and elaborate temple forms are all part of this extraordinary feat of rock-cut engineering.

Take a moment to look at the sculptures, too. One famous panel depicts Ravana attempting to shake Mount Kailasa, the mythical abode of Lord Shiva. The scene is full of movement and drama, a reminder that these artisans weren’t simply shaping stone; they were giving stories a physical form.

Ellora also tells a story of different faiths sharing the same landscape. Buddhist monasteries, Hindu temples and Jain caves sit within the same wider complex, each with its own artistic language.

Travel tip: Don’t limit your visit to the Kailasa Temple. Exploring the wider complex reveals how dramatically the design and decoration change from one group of caves to another.
