This white-sand desert in India turns silver under the moon: Why winter is the best time to experience it's beauty

Gujarat is home to a unique landmark characterised by vast white salt plains. The landscape here seems to have borrowed colours from the sky and is a magnificent sight to behold. The Rann of Kutch is a vast seasonal salt desert that looks almost otherworldly. It appears as an almost endless white surface that glows under the sun and takes on a silvery sheen under the moon.

The Rann Utsav turns this natural spectacle into a space for celebrating culture, folk traditions and colourful handicrafts. To enjoy the Rann beyond the photographs, plan your trip around the landscape, the weather and the experiences you actually want.

When should you visit the Rann of Kutch?

The Rann can be difficult to explore during the scorching summer heat. Therefore, the cooler months, broadly from October to March, are generally the best time to explore Kutch. In the post-monsoon season, the salt flats become accessible again as the floodwater recedes. Winter is also when the Rann Utsav typically takes place, with dates varying each season. According to the official Rann Utsav website, the dates for the 2026–27 festival are November 1, 2026, to March 7, 2027.

The full-moon nights are particularly special at the festival, as the white desert can appear especially striking under the moonlight.Check the official festival schedule and local access arrangements before booking for these nights. One practical tip: winter afternoons may be pleasant, but the desert can get surprisingly cold after dark. Carry layers, a warm jacket and comfortable shoes that you don’t mind getting dusty or salty.

How to reach the Rann of Kutch

Bhuj is the most convenient base for exploring the region. You can reach it by train, flight or road from major cities in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad. From Bhuj, Dhordo, which hosts the festival, is roughly 85–95 km away. It usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the site by road, depending on traffic and road conditions.

A number of Rann Utsav packages include transfers to and from Bhuj, but you can also book a private cab if you prefer exploring independently. Don’t just hurry to reach the Rann, as the journey itself is also worth your attention. It is part of the experience, with wide-open stretches of land, small villages and glimpses of everyday life far removed from the festival crowds.Remember to check the entry permit requirements for the White Rann before leaving. The area is close to the international border, so access is regulated. Check the official White Rann permit portal for the latest rules.

What else should you explore in Kutch?

It would be a shame to travel all the way to Kutch and see only the salt flats. Your itinerary should include Kala Dungar, the region’s highest point, where you can look out across the vast landscape. The view is especially remarkable around sunset, when the changing light makes the desert appear almost endless. You can also explore the region’s craft traditions. Villages around Kutch are known for distinctive embroidery, block printing, weaving and other handmade textiles. Look for Ajrakh prints, mirror-work embroidery and locally made crafts. Where possible, visit artisan workshops to understand the skill behind each piece. Buying directly from craftspeople can make for a more meaningful souvenir than purchasing from a retail shop in a crowded market. If you have three or four days, consider adding Bhuj’s historic sights, such as Chattardi and Prag Mahal, as well as Bhujia Hill for sunset views. Kutch is not just a dramatic landscape; it is a region with a rich cultural identity that deserves time beyond a single festival evening.

    Where should you stay?

Your choice depends on the kind of holiday you want. Staying at the Rann Utsav Tent City, the official tented accommodation in Dhordo, puts you close to the festival’s performances, food and organised activities. It is convenient if you want the full event experience, but book early for popular dates, especially around the full moon and the Christmas–New Year period, as accommodation can sell out quickly.Give the desert time to surprise youA Rann of Kutch holiday doesn’t have to be a checklist of camel rides, folk performances and photographs. Sometimes, the most memorable moment is simply standing on the salt flats as the sky changes colour, listening to the crunch beneath your feet and watching the horizon turn silver.Plan the practical details in advance, but leave a little room for the unexpected. In a landscape this vast, you don’t need to do very much to feel that you’ve travelled somewhere extraordinary.
