A vintage Patek Philippe wristwatch discovered during a house clearance in Camborne, Cornwall, has sold for £59,000 after attracting fierce competition from international collectors. The 1930s timepiece had remained among jewellery in a family home for decades before its value was properly assessed. Initially estimated at between £5,000 and £10,000 by Hansons Auctioneers, the watch achieved almost 12 times its lower estimate at auction on 25 August 2026. According to the BBC and Hansons Auctioneers, the remarkable sale turned a long-kept family possession into an unexpected financial windfall.

How did the 1930s Patek Philippe watch reach £59,000 at auction

The watch came to light during a house clearance following the death of its owner, who had kept it among other jewellery in her home in Camborne. Its eventual sale attracted attention because the timepiece had remained within the same Cornish family for generations, despite its potential value being largely unknown.According to Hansons Auctioneers, the watch was identified as a Patek Philippe & Co Calatrava Reference 448, a model dating from around the 1930s. It was entered into the auction house’s August sale with a guide price of £5,000 to £10,000. However, interest from collectors far exceeded expectations, and the bidding pushed the final price to £59,000.The BBC reported that the watch had been sold to a buyer from Hong Kong after attracting international interest. The result demonstrated how a relatively small object discovered among ordinary household possessions can prove considerably more valuable than its owners might expect.

What made the watch so desirable to collectors

The watch’s stainless-steel case was one of the main reasons behind the strong interest. Darren Ashley, senior valuer at Hansons Cornwall, explained in the auction house’s report that Patek Philippe produced very few stainless-steel watches during this period. The scarcity of surviving examples makes them particularly attractive to collectors. The timepiece measured 28mm and featured a dial marked Patek Philippe & Co Geneva, along with a separate seconds dial. Its movement, the mechanism that powers the watch, was signed and numbered by the Swiss watchmaker. Hansons also recorded its serial number as 822731 and its case number as 610667.Ashley said the watch continued to tick when he examined it, despite being around 90 years old. Its working condition, rarity and history within one family combined to make it an especially interesting find.

The watch passes through generations of one family

The watch’s history stretched back to the vendor’s grandfather, who lived in Wadebridge and worked as a solicitor’s clerk in Bodmin. According to Hansons Auctioneers, the watch subsequently passed to his daughter, who kept it safely among her jewellery for many years. The family also considered the possibility that the grandfather’s wife had originally bought the watch for him. She was known for enjoying designer clothing and luxury items, leading relatives to wonder whether the timepiece had been a special gift. However, the exact circumstances of its original purchase could not be established.Although its owner understood that the watch was valuable, the family did not know how much interest it might attract at auction. Hansons reported that she had even recorded a reference to an expensive timepiece in her diary in 2011. That detail offered a glimpse into the watch’s earlier life and showed that its significance had not been entirely forgotten.

International bidders drove the final price higher

The auction took place on 25 August as part of Hansons Cornwall’s sale of antiques, silver, jewellery and watches. Three members of the family attended in person, while other relatives followed the proceedings remotely on laptops and mobile phones.According to Hansons, bidders from the United States, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom expressed interest in the timepiece. Two international telephone bidders had arranged to take part, including a major watch collector in New York and another bidder in China. The New York participant remained in contention until the price reached approximately £52,000. The final contest then developed between an online bidder in Japan and the Chinese telephone bidder. As the competing offers climbed towards £60,000, the auction became an emotional moment for the family watching the result unfold. The Chinese telephone bidder ultimately prevailed, with the hammer falling at £59,000.Hansons confirmed that the sale price was almost six times the upper estimate of £10,000 and nearly 12 times the lower estimate of £5,000. The watch was subsequently set to leave Cornwall for its new home in Hong Kong. The result highlighted the importance of having inherited possessions assessed by specialists rather than relying on appearance or family assumptions. Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said the outcome illustrated why people should not dismiss inherited items without obtaining expert advice. The sale also showed how an item’s background can contribute to its significance.
