US needs 1.7 million skilled workers a year, but Trump's visa crackdown could leave industries short
The report estimates that 24% of the skilled trades workforce is aged 55 or older, raising concerns about retirements and replacement needs. Demand is also growing amid investments in data centres, energy modernisation and advanced manufacturing.

The US needs roughly 1.7 million new skilled workers annually through 2035, according to The State of America’s Skilled Trades report. Yet the Trump administration has tightened restrictions on foreign workers, including suspending eight technology and outsourcing firms from filing new applications under the Permanent Labour Certification (PERM) programme, according to The Times of India. The contrast highlights the challenge facing the US as it seeks to meet growing demand for skilled workers while prioritising domestic hiring. The report, backed by Jobs for the Future (JFF) and the Burning Glass Institute (BGI), says the US workforce system is preparing only 55 qualified workers for every 100 needed across key technical fields. It estimates that 24% of the skilled trades workforce is aged 55 or older, raising concerns about retirements and replacement needs. Demand is also growing amid investments in data centres, energy modernisation and advanced manufacturing.Industrial machinery mechanics and millwrights rank at the 98th percentile on the national Labour Shortage Index, while electricians rank at the 85th percentile. The report points to a widening gap between the number of skilled workers required and the workforce being prepared to meet that demand.

PERM suspension affects major technology firms

The US department of labour suspended eight technology and outsourcing firms from filing new PERM applications. The affected companies include Indian IT firms Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech and Cognizant, as well as US companies Microsoft and Adobe.PERM is a key step in the employment-based green card process for many foreign workers, including some H-1B visa holders. The reported suspension has added uncertainty for Indian IT professionals seeking permanent residency through employer sponsorship.US officials cited concerns about wage undercutting and alleged misuse of foreign-worker programmes. The administration has said its aim is to encourage companies to hire American workers.

A test for US workforce policy

The two developments present a challenge for US workforce policy. The skilled-trades report points to a substantial shortfall in the domestic pipeline, while the immigration crackdown seeks to reduce reliance on foreign workers.Whether domestic training and recruitment can meet the projected demand of 1.7 million new skilled workers a year through 2035 remains a key question.
