How to plant potatoes in fall: Simple tips to get a head start on next season’s harvest

Most gardeners think of potatoes as a spring crop, but autumn can be a smart time to plant them too. In regions with mild winters, fall planting lets the tubers settle in while the soil is still warm, and in many parts of India, October and November are in fact the main sowing months for the winter crop. With cooler weather, fewer pests and steadier moisture, a little effort now can mean a bigger, healthier harvest later. Here is a simple five-step guide to planting potatoes in fall, even if you only have a few pots or a small patch.

Check your climate and pick the right time

Fall planting works best where winters are mild or where the soil does not freeze hard. Aim to plant about six to eight weeks before your first expected frost, or when daytime temperatures settle in the mild range. Planting too late can leave the tubers sitting in cold, wet soil, where they rot. Check your local conditions and, if possible, ask nearby gardeners or an agricultural extension office what works in your area. Cooler, dry weather suits potatoes far better than hot or very damp spells.

    Choose healthy seed potatoes

Buy certified seed potatoes from a nursery or garden store, rather than using supermarket ones, which are often treated to stop sprouting and can carry disease. Look for firm tubers with small buds, or “eyes”, and no soft spots or mould. Early and mid-season varieties usually do well in fall. If the potatoes are larger than an egg, cut them into pieces with at least two eyes each, and let the cut sides dry for a day or two so a protective skin forms.

    Prepare loose, well-draining soil

Potatoes need soft, loose soil so the tubers can swell without struggling. Choose a spot with at least six hours of sun and good drainage, and loosen the soil to a depth of about 10 to 12 inches. Add compost or well-rotted manure to increase fertility. Do not use fresh manure, which can cause scab. Heavy, waterlogged soil causes rot, so add sand or raise the bed if needed. For pots or grow bags, use a deep container with drainage holes, and a light potting mix.

Plant at the right depth and spacing

Dig trenches or holes about four inches deep and place each piece with the eyes facing up. Space them roughly 10 to 12 inches apart, with rows about two feet apart, so plants have room to grow. Cover them with a couple of inches of soil, and water gently to settle it. As the shoots grow to around six to eight inches tall, pile more soil around the stems, a practice called hilling. This protects developing tubers from sunlight, which turns them green and bitter.

Water, mulch and protect through the cool months

Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy, especially while the plants are growing and forming tubers, and cut back on watering as the leaves begin to yellow. A layer of straw or dry leaves around the plants keeps soil temperature steady, holds moisture and discourages weeds. In frost-prone areas, cover plants with cloth or extra mulch on cold nights. Harvest the potatoes when the leaves turn yellow and die back. Dry them off in a shaded place before storing in a cool dark place.
