Why Portugal fined Cristiano Ronaldo exactly €255 for walking out despite his massive $1.2 billion net worth: Reason beind modest penalty
Cristiano Ronaldo received exactly €255 fine and a backdated suspension, raising questions over how Portugal determined the penalty for walking out.

Cristiano Ronaldo earns an estimated $300 million a year, yet Portugal’s football federation fined him just €255 for walking out of the national-team camp, alongside a 30-day suspension that was backdated. The seemingly lenient punishment has raised eyebrows, prompting questions over whether the federation went easy on its biggest star. Ronaldo, whose estimated net worth ranges between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion, became the world’s first billionaire footballer. So, how did the federation arrive at this surprisingly small fine, and why did the suspension have little impact on Ronaldo’s international schedule?

Ronaldo was fined under a rule covering players who abandon national duty

The Portuguese Football Federation’s Disciplinary Council found Ronaldo guilty of intentionally leaving national-team duties without an acceptable justification, under Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations. The case followed his departure from Portugal’s camp during the October international break, amid a dispute over his playing time under Jesus. The federation’s ruling imposed a 30-day suspension and an additional fine of 2.5 Units of Account, amounting to €255. The council said it had upheld the charges in full, finding that Ronaldo had committed the disciplinary offence on one occasion and intentionally.

The punishment followed a provisional suspension, with the federation describing the final outcome as “adequate and sufficient”. Ronaldo admitted responsibility for leaving the camp, publicly apologised and said he would accept whatever sanction was imposed. He has also made clear that he is not ready to retire from international football and remains keen to represent Portugal. The disciplinary council also said Ronaldo had formally admitted the facts underlying the charge in a statement submitted on Friday, October 16. His confession and clean disciplinary record were among the factors that reduced the severity of the punishment.

The €255 figure comes from a fixed accounting unit

The fine was not calculated as a percentage of Ronaldo’s salary, nor was the federation required to consider his wealth when setting the amount. Its regulations use a fixed legal measure called a Unit of Account, or UC, valued at €102.Under Article 160(1), the standard financial penalty for this offence is between five and 10 UC, equivalent to €510 to €1,020. The regulation also provides for a suspension ranging from one to six months.Ronaldo’s case was assessed with mitigating circumstances, including his lack of a previous disciplinary record over his 20-plus-year international career, his full, unconditional confession to the facts underlying the charge, and his public apology to fans and teammates, expressing remorse for his actions. Under the sentencing framework described in the disciplinary materials, these factors reduced the applicable financial sanction range to 1.25–2.5 Units of Account (UC), setting the maximum fine at €255. Here’s how the rules and calculations led to that figure. The council selected the upper end of that reduced range: 2.5 UC multiplied by €102 produces exactly €255. In other words, the fine was the maximum permitted within the reduced legal limits, rather than an amount chosen simply because the federation wished to go easy on Ronaldo. The same mitigation affected his sporting punishment, although the suspension carried consequences beyond the relatively modest financial figure.

His suspension was set at 30 days, with Portugal’s next match in view

The council imposed a 30-day suspension, the minimum duration described in the ruling’s adjusted range. The federation backdated the suspension to the period beginning around Ronaldo’s departure from camp, meaning much of the ban elapsed before Portugal’s next scheduled international fixture.According to the Associated Press, the suspension began on October 1, the day of Portugal’s game against Denmark. Ronaldo had already served 19 days by the time the punishment was reported, leaving him expected to be available for Portugal’s next Nations League match against Denmark on November 14.

The timeline meant the suspension was unlikely to cost him an international appearance, provided the dates and eligibility assessment remained unchanged. Portugal’s federation president, Pedro Proença, has also described Ronaldo as a key player and expressed confidence that the captain would resolve his dispute with Jesus and return to the squad.

The fine is tiny beside Ronaldo’s earnings, but the rules did not measure his wealth

The €255 penalty looks startling when compared with Ronaldo’s income. Forbes estimates that he is set to earn around $300 million in 2026, including approximately $250 million from Al Nassr during the 2026–27 season and another $50 million through endorsements and business ventures.Sky Sports has reported that Ronaldo earns roughly £488,000 a day at Al Nassr, meaning he could cover the fine in about 39 seconds on those wages. For Ronaldo, €255 is barely a dent in his fortune. But the small figure has a very specific explanation: Portugal’s disciplinary rules, combined with his admission and clean record, brought the maximum permissible fine down to just 2.5 accounting units. The 30-day suspension was also backdated, meaning he would be eligible for Portugal’s next match, should he wish to rejoin the national side.
