Psychology says people who learned to stay silent to keep the peace as children may grow up struggling to understand what they really want, think and feel

Psychology says people who learned to stay silent to keep the peace as children may grow up struggling to understand what they really want, think and feel

For some people, the hardest question in a group is not what they think about a big decision. It is where they want to eat. They can quickly work out what everyone else prefers, which suggestion might upset a friend, and how to avoid an unnecessary disagreement. But when someone turns to them and asks what they actually want, the answer may not come easily. This habit can look like kindness, patience or an easygoing personality. Sometimes it genuinely is. But when a person repeatedly hides their preferences because disagreement feels uncomfortable or unsafe, keeping the peace can gradually come at the cost of expressing themselves. The pattern may begin early, when a child discovers that staying quiet helps avoid arguments, criticism or rejection. Over time, that response can become familiar enough to carry into friendships, romantic relationships and workplaces. The important distinction is that choosing not to argue is different from feeling unable to speak.

    The quiet lessons children absorb

Children do not need to be directly told to suppress their opinions to learn that doing so may make life easier. They observe how adults respond when someone disagrees, asks for something or expresses anger. In a tense household, a child might avoid mentioning a problem because they fear adding to an argument. At school, they may stop challenging a popular opinion after being laughed at. In a friendship, they might agree with plans simply to avoid being excluded. Each experience can teach a similar lesson: expressing what you feel may carry a social cost, while agreeing keeps things comfortable. The American Psychological Association explains that children develop emotional regulation through a combination of their temperament, environment and relationships with caregivers. Adults can help by teaching children to recognise their feelings, put them into words and manage difficult emotions rather than simply hide them. This does not mean every child who grows up around conflict will become a people-pleaser. Nor is every quiet child struggling. But when disagreement repeatedly feels risky, silence can become a learned way of protecting relationships.

Learning to compromise is part of healthy relationships. The difficulty begins when a person automatically puts everyone else’s comfort ahead of their own, without pausing to consider what they want. Someone might accept a job they do not like because their family approves of it. Another person may agree to a holiday destination they dislike, tolerate an upsetting remark or avoid asking a partner for a change. Each decision can seem too small to justify a disagreement. Repeated over time, however, these choices can leave a person feeling disconnected from their preferences. Instead of asking, “What do I think?”, they may instinctively ask, “What will keep everyone happy?”Research on self-silencing offers a reason to take this pattern seriously. A 2021 meta-analysis in the ‘Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology‘, which combined findings from 42 published and unpublished studies involving 10,108 participants, found a moderate positive association between self-silencing and depressive symptoms. This does not prove that staying quiet causes depression, but it highlights a meaningful relationship between suppressing one’s voice and emotional well-being. The impact can also appear in relationships. Other people may see someone who is endlessly accommodating while missing the frustration, hurt or unmet needs beneath that agreeable exterior.

The difference between choosing silence and fearing disagreement

Not every disagreement deserves a response. Sometimes letting a minor irritation pass is sensible. A person may genuinely not care which restaurant the group chooses or may decide that preserving a friendship matters more than winning an argument. Healthy compromise leaves room for choice. A person can speak up when something matters and stay quiet when it does not. Self-silencing is different when someone feels anxious about disagreeing, struggles to identify their own preference or routinely says yes despite feeling no. They may recognise their hurt only hours or days after a conversation, once the pressure to keep everyone comfortable has passed. This pattern should not automatically be treated as a disorder or a fixed personality trait. People may behave differently in different relationships, depending on whether they feel accepted and safe. The aim is not to become confrontational or to express every passing thought. It is to make sure silence remains a decision rather than a reflex.

Change can begin with small, low-pressure choices. Instead of immediately saying, “Anything is fine,” pause and name one preference. Choose the restaurant you would enjoy, suggest a film you actually want to watch or tell a friend that you see a situation differently. Simple sentences can help: “I would prefer something else,” “That comment bothered me,” or “I need some time before I decide.” You do not have to build a lengthy defence around every preference. It may also help to notice what happens internally when you disagree. Are you worried someone will become angry, reject you or think less of you? Recognising that fear can make it easier to separate the discomfort of speaking up from the actual consequences of doing so. Start with people who listen respectfully. If expressing needs brings overwhelming anxiety, affects important relationships or feels impossible because of past experiences, a qualified mental health professional can help you practise healthier communication.Keeping the peace is valuable when it protects mutual respect. It becomes costly when one person must continually disappear for everyone else to feel comfortable. You do not need to become the loudest person in the room. You simply deserve to be present in it, with preferences, boundaries and opinions that count too.
