IND vs NZ: India's T20 reboot begins amid travel fatigue, tight schedule and bowling concerns

It’s been barely 48 hours since India landed in Christchurch after taking a flight out of Bengaluru. Shreyas Iyer and his men will be forgiven for still being sleep-deprived and jet-lagged when they walk out at Hagley Oval for the first of five T20Is against New Zealand today. Indian cricketers are conditioned to relentless travel, but that does not make the grind any less demanding. The modern cricket calendar is shaped more by commercial interests and diplomatic necessities and less by sporting logic and priorities. This tour is a case study.Stretching over 43 days, the visit marks a century of sporting ties between India and New Zealand, a relationship that dates back to the great Major Dhyan Chand leading an Indian Army hockey team to the country in 1926. It also offers New Zealand crowds a rare chance to watch Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma when the five-match ODI series follows the T20Is from Nov 4.Beyond all the ceremonial details, the tour could provide clues about the direction that Indian cricket takes across the three formats. For the Indian cricket fan and an unforgiving media, large sections of which are digital, the strains of a packed schedule are rarely considered valid excuses for a dip in performance standards and middling results. One saw that during the difficult tours of Ireland and England earlier this year. For many fans, critics and pundits, a side that can win two successive World Cups in a fickle format like T20, just cannot lose. While the Test team has got a good chance to acclimatise, the T20I side has been on the treadmill, playing non-stop in different conditions and continents. Predictably, skipper Iyer downplayed the scheduling challenge.“We’ve done that in the past… It’s fun at the same time to be travelling, playing and getting accustomed to new conditions. We just want to put the reasons aside and see how we plan to win,” he said on match-eve.The coming 10 days could prove revealing for both the captain and his team. India’s T20 setup remains in transition, with the road ultimately leading to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand later that year. While the composition of the touring squads suggests the two-Test series remains a priority, the T20 side arrives carrying a degree of desperation. That was reflected in the decision to recall Bhuvneshwar Kumar.Discarded after the 2022 New Zealand tour, the veteran seamer, now nearing 37, has been drafted in to lend experience to a bowling attack that is still searching for options in the absence of the peerless Jasprit Bumrah.“Bhuvi brings a lot of experience. We were lacking that… He has won the IPL in the last two years and knows how to dominate this format,” Iyer explained. The bigger question is whether India have done enough over the last two years to build bowling depth beyond Bumrah. Bhuvneshwar’s return can be looked at with a mixed lens. Yes, it is a vote of confidence in a trusted campaigner. Under Gautam Gambhir and the current selection panel, India largely embraced a perform-or-perish approach, often showing limited patience with senior players. The recall of Bhuvneshwar therefore feels like a tactical retreat, an attempt to steady a T20 ship that rocked violently during the UK tour earlier this year. Whether this small step back helps India take a significant leap forward is a question only the next fortnight can answer.
