Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet, playwright, novelist, and one of the most celebrated wits of Victorian London. He wrote the play The Importance of Being Earnest and the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, and to this day, quotes from his works hold relevance and convey profound messages that are relatable in situations that we face in our daily lives. He once talked about a profound idea that everyone that most of us would relate to. Everyone wants to be liked, but only a few people admit that they also want to be noticed and, at the same time, worry about what people say behind our backs, yet we feel a small sting when nobody says anything at all.Silence can feel heavier than criticism; simultaneously, a harsh word at least proves you exist in someone’s mind. Silence suggests you left no mark and this feeling is much older than making a presence on social media.Let’s dig in to find out what he exactly said.
Quote of the day
There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.
Oscar Wilde
What does the quote mean?
Wilde’s line is a paradox, a statement that sounds wrong until you think about it. Being gossiped about hurts, but being ignored means you do not affect anyone. Being talked about, even unfairly, shows that you have sufficient presence to be noticed, but not being given importance is the real loss.WIlde’s words come from Chapter I of the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, spoken by the character and witty Lord Henry Wotton. In this scene, Lord Henry tells the painter Basil Hallward that it is silly to throw away a reputation, because there is only one thing worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about. The scene is simple. Basil refuses to exhibit his best painting, and Lord Henry teases him for it.
How are his words relevant today?
People trying to make a career out of the digital world are running behind to chase limelight and waiting for just that one reel to go viral, which makes all the difference.Influencers, brands, and content creators know that going unnoticed is a kind of failure; on the contrary, a viral controversy can bring more followers than years of quiet, good work. People chase “buzz,” and many measure their worth in likes, views, and replies. But this also has a flip side, and Wilde’s own life sets an example for it. His 1895 trials made him the most talked-about man in London, and the attention destroyed his career and his health. Being talked about is not always a gift. Fame built on gossip can be cruel, and constant public attention is hard on mental health.
