You have had a long day, your own work is unfinished, and you barely have the energy to rest. Then a colleague asks you to take on another task, a friend needs a favour or a family member expects you to make time for them. You want to say no, but instead you hear yourself saying, “Okay, I’ll manage.” For some people, this happens so often that they end up exhausted, frustrated and sometimes resentful of the very people they wanted to help. They know they have taken on too much, yet turning down the next request still feels uncomfortable.Psychologists describe this pattern as people-pleasing: repeatedly putting other people’s needs ahead of your own, even when doing so comes at a personal cost. It is not simply about being kind or considerate. The difficulty begins when a person feels that keeping others happy is more important than protecting their own time, energy or preferences.A 2026 study published in Current Psychology developed and tested a measure of people-pleasing in two samples of 571 and 1,323 participants. The researchers identified three key dimensions: feeling responsible, neglecting one’s own needs and prioritising other people’s expectations.

Why does saying no feel so difficult?

One reason is the fear of disappointing someone. A person may worry that declining a request will make them seem selfish, unreliable or uncaring. Instead of treating a request as something they can consider, they may feel pressure to agree to preserve the relationship. Research on people-pleasing suggests that some people use agreeableness to avoid conflict, rejection or isolation. A 2025 study developed and tested a questionnaire among 2,203 Chinese university students. It examined people-pleasing through thoughts, behaviours and feelings, highlighting that the pattern involves more than simply doing favours for others. This can help explain why someone may say yes even when they know they cannot manage another responsibility. The immediate discomfort of refusing may feel harder to tolerate than the tiredness that comes later.

People-pleasing can also be linked to how a person measures their own worth. If being helpful earns praise, affection or approval, they may begin to associate saying yes with being a good friend, partner, child or employee. Over time, the person may find it difficult to distinguish between wanting to help and feeling that they must help. They might agree to plans they do not want, take responsibility for work that belongs to someone else or apologise simply because another person is upset. The 2026 study found that people-pleasing was related to traits such as agreeableness, empathy and emotionality, but was distinct from them. In other words, caring about others does not automatically mean someone is a people-pleaser. The defining feature is the tendency to put others’ needs first at the expense of one’s own.

Why the habit can leave people exhausted

The problem is not one extra favour or a single difficult week. It is the repeated experience of accepting more than a person can reasonably manage. Someone who rarely declines requests may have less time for sleep, exercise, relationships or unfinished personal tasks. They may also feel frustrated when others continue to ask for help without realising how much pressure they are under. The 2026 research discusses emotional exhaustion as a possible consequence of taking on additional responsibilities while neglecting personal needs. However, the study does not establish that people-pleasing directly causes exhaustion in every person. The pattern can also make relationships less honest. If someone routinely agrees when they want to refuse, other people may never realise that the arrangement is unfair or unsustainable.

How to start saying no without feeling guilty

Saying no does not require becoming less caring. It means recognising that another person’s disappointment does not automatically make your decision wrong.

    • Pause before agreeing: If someone asks you for a favour, resist the urge to say yes immediately. Say, “Let me check my schedule first.” This gives you time to consider your workload, energy and other commitments before making a decision.
    • Keep your refusal short and clear: You do not need to offer a long explanation every time you decline a request. A simple “I won’t be able to manage this today” is enough. Overexplaining can make you feel that you need the other person’s permission to say no.
    • Stop treating disappointment as rejection: Someone may be disappointed when you cannot help, but that does not necessarily mean they are angry with you or that the relationship is in trouble. Allowing others to have their feelings without immediately trying to fix them can make it easier to maintain boundaries.
    • Offer help only when you genuinely can: If you want to help but cannot take on the entire task, suggest a smaller alternative. For example, say, “I can help you for 15 minutes, but I can’t handle the whole thing.” Do this only if you have the time and energy; a boundary should not become another obligation.
    • Practise saying no in low-pressure situations: Start with small requests that you would ordinarily accept out of habit, such as an invitation you do not want to attend or an extra task you cannot fit into your day. Each time, remind yourself that declining a request is not the same as rejecting a person.
