Will PSG’s 10 nominated players be forced to miss Ballon d’Or? Why Sunday’s Lyon clash is rescheduled to coincide on same night

Could a sudden security postponement force Paris Saint-Germain’s brightest stars to watch their own Ballon d’Or coronation from the dugout?A last-minute police directive in Paris has triggered a bizarre logistical crisis, shifting PSG’s high-stakes Ligue 1 clash against Lyon to Monday night, placing it in a direct, agonizing bottleneck with football’s premier awards gala in London. While the club’s fit nominees face a strict professional ultimatum to remain in France, a recent wave of injuries has created an ironic twist, potentially clearing the way for the squad’s sidelined superstars to travel to the red carpet.

Why PSG’s match with Lyon was postponed

Originally scheduled to host Lyon at the Parc des Princes on Sunday, October 25, at 8:45 p.m. local time, Paris Saint-Germain will instead play on Monday, October 26, at 8:30 p.m.The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) confirmed the shift on Friday, stating that it “acknowledges the order issued by the Prefecture of Police prohibiting the holding of the PSG – Lyon match, scheduled for Matchday 8 of McDonald’s Ligue 1, on Sunday, October 25, at 8:45 p.m., and has decided, in agreement with Ligue 1+, to reschedule the match for Monday, October 26, at 8:30 p.m.”This late scheduling change comes as French authorities brace for a substantial security operation over the weekend. Law enforcement resources have been heavily stretched by nationwide demonstrations following a wave of severe unrest on October 17, when rioting and looting swept through Paris and other major cities, causing widespread damage to public buildings and private businesses.

Compounding the strain on police resources is Sunday’s high-profile NFL regular-season game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints, hosted at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis—just ten kilometres from the Place de la Bastille, where massive weekend protests are expected to converge. As a result, France’s domestic sporting schedule has faced widespread disruptions. Local authorities previously requested that Toulouse’s fixture against Troyes be pushed from Saturday to Sunday, while both Marseille and Lille reported that their official club merchandise stores had been targeted and looted during the prior weekend’s violence. The rearranged Monday night fixture carries massive sporting stakes on the pitch, bringing together two of Ligue 1’s early pacesetters. Defending champions PSG and rivals Lyon sit level at the top of the table on 14 points after seven matches, with Lyon holding the edge strictly on goal difference.

The new date creates a Ballon d’Or dilemma

The match now overlaps with the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, which is being held at the London Palladium on October 26. The gala marks the first time the award ceremony has taken place in England, with Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal among those hoping to unseat 2025 winner Ousmane Dembélé.PSG have a record 10 players on the men’s shortlist: Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes, Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz, João Neves, Willian Pacho and Ferran Torres. The club also has Warren Zaïre-Emery nominated for the Kopa Trophy, Matvey Safonov for the Yashin Trophy, Luis Enrique for Men’s Coach of the Year and PSG itself for Men’s Club of the Year. For players selected to face Lyon, the scheduling creates an obvious practical dilemma: the match in Paris clashes with the ceremony in London. Those involved are likely to prioritise their club commitments, but there has been no official confirmation of which nominees will attend the gala, whether PSG will make individual arrangements, or if the players will miss the ceremony altogether.

Injured nominees may have a different choice

Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia, Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes have been reported as injured and ruled out of the Lyon fixture. That could make attendance in London easier for them, although their travel plans have not been officially confirmed. The timing is particularly notable for Dembélé, who won the 2025 Ballon d’Or and is among the nominees again. His injury means he may be able to attend without missing the match, unlike fit teammates whose presence could be required in Paris.

Last year offers a striking precedent

PSG encountered a similar scheduling problem last season, when heavy rain forced their Le Classique match against Marseille to be moved to Monday, coinciding with the Ballon d’Or ceremony at which Dembélé won.Dembélé was fit and important to the team, but PSG’s management gave him special permission to miss the rescheduled fixture so he could attend the gala. His teammates played without him and lost 1-0 to Marseille, making the decision a consequential one on the pitch as well as a memorable moment in his career.

This year’s circumstances differ because Dembélé is reportedly injured and unavailable for the Lyon match. He would not need the same dispensation to leave the squad for London if he is unable to play, while fit nominees could face a more difficult decision. Whether PSG grants any exceptions, and which players ultimately attend, remains unconfirmed.

What happens to the nominees now?

The fit PSG nominees are likely to have their club duties to consider, while the injured players may have greater flexibility. Last year’s Dembélé arrangement shows that the club can make an exception for a major awards night, but it offers no guarantee that PSG will repeat that decision for other players. For now, the clash leaves the club balancing a top-of-the-table Ligue 1 fixture against an awards ceremony featuring an unusually large share of its squad. The final attendance picture will depend on PSG’s team plans, the players’ fitness and any decisions announced by the club or ceremony organisers.
