An Indian-origin woman living in the US recently shared a video talking about one of America’s most unusual bridges, describing how frightening the experience can become for people driving across it. She spoke about the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana, a massive bridge stretching for about 38 kilometres across Lake Pontchartrain. According to her, what initially feels like an ordinary drive can become unsettling as the road moves farther into the lake and the surrounding land slowly disappears. At one point, drivers may find themselves surrounded by nothing but water in every direction.A bridge surrounded by waterThe woman explained that the drive begins normally, with the road looking much like any other highway. However, the experience changes as motorists continue farther across the bridge. As the vehicle moves towards the middle of the lake, the shoreline behind gradually disappears. Soon, there may be no obvious land visible ahead, behind or to either side. Instead, the driver sees a long stretch of road surrounded by water. She described the experience as almost feeling like driving along a road in the middle of endless water. For someone seeing the causeway for the first time, this can create a strange sense of isolation because there is little around the road except the huge lake and the sky.The bridge’s enormous length makes that feeling even more striking. At approximately 38 kilometres, the journey is long enough for drivers to spend a considerable amount of time surrounded by the lake before reaching the opposite shore. Why the drive can feel scaryIn her video, the woman said the unusual surroundings can make some drivers anxious or even cause them to panic. The absence of visible land can make the journey feel very different from a normal road trip. She claimed that there have been instances in which frightened drivers stopped their vehicles on the bridge, contacted the police and asked for help. Her description focused on how the combination of the bridge’s length, the open water and the lack of visible land can make some motorists feel overwhelmed. The experience can be particularly unsettling because, even when drivers use designated safety areas, they remain surrounded by the vast expanse of Lake Pontchartrain rather than a conventional roadside landscape. It is not the oceanOne of the details the woman highlighted was that the enormous body of water surrounding motorists is not the ocean. It is Lake Pontchartrain, a large brackish estuary in southeastern Louisiana. From the middle of the causeway, however, the sheer size of the lake can make it difficult for drivers to appreciate that they are crossing an inland body of water rather than travelling over the open sea. That visual impression is one of the reasons the bridge can look so dramatic in videos and photographs. With water extending towards the horizon, the road can appear to have been built directly into an enormous expanse of blue. One of the world’s longestThe Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is widely recognised as one of the world’s most remarkable bridges. The causeway consists of two parallel bridges connecting the New Orleans-area community of Metairie on the south shore with Mandeville on the north shore. The longer crossing measures about 38.4 kilometres and is recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s longest continuous bridge over water. The first span opened in 1956, while a second parallel span was completed in 1969. The two bridges allow thousands of motorists to travel between the north and south shores of Lake Pontchartrain.A challenge for nervous driversFor confident motorists, crossing the causeway may simply be part of their daily journey. But for someone who is uncomfortable with heights, open water or long bridges, the experience can be very different. The woman’s video captures that contrast. What looks like an ordinary road at the beginning can gradually turn into a journey where the driver appears to be surrounded by water on all sides.
