Psychology says children who always wait for their parents' approval may be struggling with more than confidence

A child who asks, “Is this okay?” before making even a small decision may simply be looking for reassurance. But when a child consistently needs a parent to approve their choices, worries intensely about making mistakes or avoids decisions without guidance, there may be something deeper worth understanding. Psychology does not suggest that seeking parental approval is automatically unhealthy. Parents are naturally important sources of guidance, particularly during childhood. The concern arises when approval becomes the main measure a child uses to decide whether their choices, achievements or even personality are acceptable. Research on parental expectations, psychological control and autonomy suggests that the way parents respond to children’s decisions can influence how comfortable they become with making choices independently.

Does your child come to you when upset, or do they prefer to deal with their emotions alone?

Children naturally look to parents for feedback. A young child may ask whether a drawing is good, whether an outfit looks nice or whether they completed a task correctly. Encouragement can help children develop confidence and understand their abilities. The pattern becomes more concerning when a child starts believing that being approved of is necessary to feel good about themselves. For example, a child may repeatedly ask a parent which subject to choose, what hobby to pursue or what clothes to wear, even when they are capable of deciding. They may become extremely upset after making a choice their parent dislikes or avoid trying something because they fear getting it wrong. One possible explanation is that children can gradually internalise parental expectations. Instead of asking themselves, “What do I want?”, they may begin asking, “What will make my parents happy?” Research involving 466 Indian emerging adults aged 18 to 25 found a significant association between perceived parental expectations, maladaptive perfectionism and fear of negative evaluation. The researchers found that maladaptive perfectionism mediated the relationship between perceived parental expectations and fear of negative evaluation. This does not mean parental expectations automatically create anxiety or perfectionism. The study was cross-sectional, so it cannot establish that parental expectations directly caused these outcomes. But it does highlight how expectations can become psychologically important for young people.

Why fear of disappointing parents can follow children into adulthood

Why fear of disappointing parents can follow children into adulthood<br>

The need for approval does not necessarily disappear when a child grows up. An adult may still call their parents before accepting a job, choosing a partner, moving to another city or making an important financial decision. Seeking advice is not itself a problem. Healthy relationships can include close communication and mutual guidance. The difference may lie in whether the person feels free to disagree. Someone can listen to their parents’ opinion and still make their own decision. Another person may feel unable to choose differently because disagreement creates guilt, fear or a sense that they have failed their family. The Indian study found that higher perceived parental expectations were associated with greater fear of negative evaluation. The researchers also linked these expectations with maladaptive perfectionism, where people develop unrealistic standards and become excessively concerned about mistakes or disappointing others. This can create a difficult cycle. A child wants approval, works hard to meet expectations and becomes afraid of making mistakes. Over time, the fear of disappointing others can become stronger than the person’s own understanding of what they want.

    Supporting independence without withdrawing guidance

None of this means parents should stop advising their children or stop having expectations. Children need boundaries, structure and guidance. What matters is whether they also have opportunities to develop autonomy. Parents can encourage this by allowing children to make age-appropriate choices, listening to their reasons and treating mistakes as opportunities to learn rather than evidence of failure. Instead of immediately saying, “Do this,” a parent might ask, “What do you think would work?” Instead of focusing only on the result, they can recognise effort, problem-solving and persistence. It is also important to remember that every child is different. A child who frequently seeks reassurance may be naturally cautious, anxious, shy or simply going through a developmental stage. One behaviour alone cannot reveal a child’s psychological state. The bigger picture is the pattern. If a child feels safe disagreeing with their parents, making mistakes and expressing preferences, parental guidance can coexist with independence. But if they believe every decision needs approval and every mistake risks disappointment, it may be worth asking whether they are learning to trust themselves. Ultimately, confidence is not simply believing that you will always make the right choice. It is knowing that you can make a choice, learn from it and still feel worthy when things do not go perfectly.
