Mangroves may not be the first thing that comes to mind when people think about a pet, but Florida teenager Alex Webster is turning that idea into a unique environmental mission. Through the ‘My Pet Mangrove programme’, Alex is encouraging people to form a personal connection with these important coastal forests and help keep them protected. The National Geographic Society describes mangroves as coastal forests that store carbon, protect coastlines and help fight climate change. It also highlights Webster’s programme as an effort to ensure these ecosystems remain protected. The idea stands out because it gives conservation a more personal face. Instead of seeing mangroves as distant forests, people can think of them as something they can care about and help preserve. Webster’s work has earned recognition as one of the National Geographic Society’s 2026 Slingshot Challenge Award recipients.

How is Alex Webster making mangroves feel like pets

The answer is in the name itself, ‘My Pet Mangrove.’ The National Geographic Society presents Webster’s project as a creative way of protecting mangrove ecosystems. The programme uses the idea of having a mangrove as a pet, transforming an environmental issue into something more familiar and personal. Rather than relying only on facts about climate change or coastal protection, the concept gives people a different reason to care. A pet is something that is looked after, valued and remembered. Applying that idea to a mangrove can make conservation feel less distant and more immediate. The project therefore connects an everyday idea with a much larger environmental challenge. It suggests that protecting nature does not always have to begin with a large organisation or a complicated campaign. Sometimes, it can start by helping someone develop a simple emotional connection with the natural world.

    Why are mangroves so important

Mangroves occupy a special place along coastlines, where land meets the sea. They are more than simply collections of trees growing near water. According to the National Geographic Society, these coastal forests store carbon, protect coastlines and help fight climate change. That makes their survival important not only for the plants and animals that depend on them, but also for people living near the coast. Mangroves form a natural part of coastal environments, and their ability to help protect shorelines gives them a role that reaches far beyond their appearance. But protecting an ecosystem can sometimes feel like an abstract task. People may understand that forests matter without feeling personally connected to a particular one. Webster’s approach takes a different route by making mangroves something people can relate to on an individual level.

Can a simple idea change how people see conservation

Mangroves can be discussed through large subjects such as carbon storage, climate change and coastal protection. Those subjects are important, but they can also feel distant from everyday life. By giving mangroves a more familiar identity as pets, Webster’s programme offers another way of starting that conversation. The National Geographic Society specifically says Webster’s programme is making sure these ecosystems remain protected. That description highlights the central purpose of the project of encouraging people to value mangroves so that they are more likely to care about their future. There is no complicated message at the heart of the project. It is about making an important ecosystem easier to understand and care about. Webster’s My Pet Mangrove is memorable precisely because it is unusual. A mangrove is not an obvious pet, and that unexpected comparison can make people stop and think. By giving people a more personal way to think about these ecosystems, the Florida teenager is showing that environmental action can begin with something as simple as caring about a tree.
