In 1993, a Bahamas artist began covering his home with shells, bottles, coins and tiles; decades later it became a giant dolphin-themed museum

For decades, one house in Alice Town, Bimini, has been slowly transformed into something that looks less like a conventional home and more like a walk-in mosaic. Artist Ashley Saunders began building Dolphin House in 1993, using discarded and salvaged objects he found around the island, at sea and at demolition sites. Shells, tiles, bottles, glass floats, coins, mirrors and pieces of marble were worked into the walls, floors and surfaces, turning everyday debris into part of the building itself. Dolphins became a recurring motif after Saunders’ encounters with wild dolphins influenced his artistic work.Today, 27 dolphins feature throughout the house, helping give the unusual structure its name. What began as a personal building project gradually became a record of Saunders’ life, artistic ideas and connection to Bimini, with decades of collecting and construction preserved in its colourful, intricate surfaces.

How Dolphin House in Bimini became a home filled with art

Saunders did not approach the building as a conventional home that would later be decorated. The decoration became part of its construction and identity. Over many years, he collected discarded and salvaged materials from building sites, demolition work and the sea, finding uses for objects that might otherwise have been thrown away.Tiles sit beside shells. Old bottles and fishermen’s glass floats appear among fragments of marble, rusted chains, coins and cracked mirrors. Rather than being confined to a particular room or corner, the mosaics spread across the structure, covering both interior and exterior surfaces. The result is difficult to separate from the man who made it. There is no obvious boundary between architecture, sculpture and personal collection. The house became the medium through which Saunders could work with the objects he had accumulated and, at the same time, preserve pieces of the place where he had spent his life.

The Bimini history behind Dolphin House

The house is also tied closely to Saunders’ interest in local history. His family has lived on Bimini for generations, with roots on the island reaching back to the period of the American Revolution. For him, collecting discarded objects was not only an artistic exercise. The materials and designs became part of a larger record of island life. That interest extends beyond the walls of the house. Saunders has written two volumes on the history of Bimini as well as four books of poetry about the islands. His tours of Alice Town combine these interests, taking visitors through the settlement while explaining parts of Bimini’s past and the ideas behind his unusual home. The Dolphin House Museum therefore works on several levels at once. It is a residence shaped into an artwork, a collection of salvaged objects and a place where local history is presented through the perspective of someone whose family has longstanding ties to the island.

The strong structure hidden beneath Dolphin House’s mosaics

The building’s appearance can make it seem fragile, particularly where small pieces of glass, tile and shell cover large sections of wall. The underlying structure is quite different. Saunders designed the house as a substantial concrete building, with the strength needed for Bimini’s exposure to hurricanes. That contrast is part of its character. The basic structure is heavy and practical, while the surfaces are crowded with colour, texture and irregular detail. A piece of shoreline debris can sit next to a carefully placed tile, while a weathered object from a demolition site becomes part of a permanent wall.Years of work turned those small additions into something much larger than their individual parts.

How visitors experience Dolphin House in Bimini

Saunders has kept the house open to visitors, allowing people to walk through the building and see the mosaics at close range. His tours also provide context for the objects and motifs that might otherwise appear to be an assortment of unrelated decorations. The experience is closely connected to Alice Town itself. Rather than being an isolated attraction removed from the community, Dolphin House forms part of Saunders’ wider walking tours of Bimini. The house offers one physical expression of his interests, while the surrounding streets provide the setting for the stories and history he has spent decades collecting. For visitors, that makes the building more than a place to photograph. Its walls are effectively a collection of references to the island, assembled gradually rather than installed according to a single architectural plan.
