‘This settles the debate’: Piers Morgan claims Messi’s retirement at 39 proves Ronaldo is the GOAT
Piers Morgan reignites the Messi-Ronaldo GOAT debate, claiming Messi’s retirement proves Ronaldo is football’s greatest.

Lionel Messi’s decision to retire from international football has given Piers Morgan another opportunity to make his feelings about the greatest player debate unmistakably clear. The Argentine icon announced on Monday that he would no longer represent his country, bringing an extraordinary 21-year international career to an end after 207 appearances and 125 goals. Messi leaves the Argentina setup as his country’s record appearance-maker and leading goalscorer, having finally transformed a career once defined by international disappointment into one of unprecedented success. His decision came after a difficult period for the 39-year-old, both professionally and personally. Argentina had been defeated by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, giving Messi a second World Cup final defeat after the loss to Germany in 2014. Just weeks later, his father, Jorge Messi, died at the age of 68.For Morgan, however, Messi’s departure from the international stage did not simply mark the end of an era. It provided another reason to argue that Cristiano Ronaldo should be regarded as the greatest footballer in history. The broadcaster pointed towards Ronaldo’s record 146 international goals for Portugal and declared that Messi’s retirement had effectively settled the long-running argument in his friend’s favour.

Piers Morgan used Messi’s retirement to make his Ronaldo argument

Morgan has never been particularly shy about where he stands in the debate between Ronaldo and Messi, and his reaction to Monday’s announcement was therefore unlikely to pass without comment. The British broadcaster has previously made his position clear by leaving Messi out of his all-time XI, despite the Argentine’s record eight Ballon d’Or wins and extraordinary list of team honours.Morgan has also named four players he believes were better than Messi, making his view on the GOAT debate even clearer. The British broadcaster first acknowledged Messi’s international scoring record before immediately drawing attention to Ronaldo’s superior tally for Portugal.“Breaking: Lionel Messi retires from international football, after scoring 125 goals for the Argentina national team, placing him second on the list of highest international goalscorers,” Morgan wrote on X.He then followed up by highlighting Ronaldo’s record for Portugal.“Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 146 goals for the Portugal national team, the highest figure in the history of football at international level. This settles the debate over who is the best player in history,” he added. It was hardly a neutral assessment, particularly given Morgan’s well-known friendship with Ronaldo, but it quickly attracted attention because Messi’s retirement has once again placed the two careers under the microscope.Ronaldo has scored 146 goals for Portugal, while Messi finished his Argentina career with 125 goals, leaving the Portuguese forward 21 goals clear at international level. Ronaldo’s record is also particularly significant because he has remained the leading men’s international goalscorer while continuing to play for Portugal at the highest level.Morgan’s argument, however, reduces one of football’s most complicated debates to a single statistical comparison, while Messi’s international career offers plenty of evidence for those who disagree with him.

Messi leaves Argentina with a legacy that was once difficult to imagine

When Messi’s international career began in 2005, his relationship with Argentina was far more complicated than the numbers he eventually produced might suggest. The forward experienced repeated heartbreak with his country, most notably losing the 2014 World Cup final and suffering defeats in successive Copa América finals before finally winning his first senior international major trophy at the 2021 Copa América. That breakthrough changed everything.Messi subsequently captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, completing the achievement that had eluded him for much of his career. He then added another Copa América title in 2024 before leading Argentina back to the World Cup final in 2026.The 2026 tournament ultimately ended in disappointment, with Argentina losing the final to Spain, but Messi still departed the international stage with a résumé that includes a World Cup, two Copa América titles and an Olympic gold medal.

He also finished as Argentina’s record appearance-maker and scorer, with his 125 goals coming across 207 appearances. His final appearance came against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, after which he took several weeks to consider his future before confirming that he would no longer play for Argentina.Messi explained that the decision was painful but said he felt the time had arrived to step away.“After all this time since the final match, and after long reflection, I want to announce to everyone that I have decided to retire from playing with the national team,” Messi wrote in a statement on Instagram.“It was a painful decision and it still hurts me deep down, but I realise that the time has come. I swear to you that I always gave everything I had, not only during the recent years in which we achieved everything, but before that too.”Messi added that he had always fought to represent Argentina and to make supporters proud.“I always fought and gave all I had for this shirt, and to make you happy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football,” he wrote. In a further reflection on his decision, Messi admitted that he felt his time with the national team was coming to an end.“There isn’t much time left, and different chapters are coming to an end. This is one that hurts me a lot,” he said. “I love, I loved, and I will always love being part of the national team. I gave everything I had, and I don’t have anything more to give.”

Ronaldo is chasing a career milestone Messi never reached

Ronaldo’s international record is only one part of the statistical case Morgan believes separates him from Messi. The Portugal captain is also closing in on one of football’s most remarkable individual milestones: 1,000 senior career goals.Ronaldo has already scored more than 900 goals for club and country, and his continued involvement with Al-Nassr and Portugal gives him a realistic opportunity to reach four figures before retiring. At 41, he remains one of the most prolific forwards in the game, even as his role and playing time continue to evolve. The milestone has become a central part of the final chapter of Ronaldo’s career. Rather than simply trying to extend his longevity, he is now pursuing a record that would place him in an almost entirely separate statistical category.Ronaldo recently gave his clearest indication yet that retirement is approaching, saying that the upcoming season is “probably” his final year of football and that he wants to leave what he described as a spectacular legacy. That creates a clear contrast between the two rivals. Messi has ended his international career after completing his redemption story with Argentina, while Ronaldo is still chasing one last record that could define how his career is remembered.Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored 978 official senior career goals in 1,333 games, leaving him just 22 goals short of the 1,000-goal milestone. By comparison, the 39-year-old Messi has scored 927 official senior career goals for club and country in 1,171 matches. The numbers tell an interesting story. Ronaldo has the higher total and more international goals, while Messi has reached his tally in fewer matches.Whether reaching 1,000 goals would settle the GOAT debate is another question entirely, but it would add another extraordinary achievement to an already historic career. For Morgan, though, Ronaldo’s international scoring record, longevity and pursuit of that unprecedented total provide more than enough evidence.Messi’s retirement may have closed one chapter of the rivalry, but Ronaldo’s numbers suggest that the argument will continue until the final goal of his career is scored.
