‘We feel lucky to have survived. It is like a second birth for us’: How did the owners of Nepal’s green house survive the flash floods?

'We feel lucky to have survived. It is like a second birth for us': How did the owners of Nepal's green house survive the flash floods?

A green house in Nepal has become one of the most striking images from the devastating flash floods that hit parts of the country on August 26.Powerful floodwaters carrying mud, rocks and huge pieces of debris rushed through villages and towns, causing widespread damage. But in Trishuli, one green house was left standing as muddy water and debris surged around it.Videos from the area showed the floodwaters rising dramatically, with some clips showing the rushing water reaching the height of buildings. Nearby homes were partially submerged, while several structures suffered extensive damage.Yet the green house somehow remained intact.

Family escaped to the upper floor

For the family inside, survival came down to getting upstairs in time.Laxmi Pandey, who owns the house, said floodwater entered the building, forcing her family to move to the upper floor.Speaking to news agency ANI, Pandey described surviving the disaster as a second chance at life.“We feel lucky to have survived. It is like a second birth for us. We had climbed to the upper floor as flood water had entered my house. Even during the Nepal earthquake, we felt very strong tremors, and the nearby houses collapsed. We were rescued and saved by our neighbours,” Pandey said. The family managed to survive while the flood continued to tear through the surrounding area. And when the water eventually receded, their house was still standing.

Why did the green house survive?

The building’s survival has naturally led to speculation about what made it stronger than some of the structures around it.An architecture enthusiast on X suggested that its construction could have played a major role.“This lone structure took a direct hit from a massive debris flow, a dense slurry of mud and car-sized boulders moving at highway speeds, and refused to fall,” the user wrote. The user pointed out that many homes in Himalayan valleys are built using stone masonry, sometimes without enough structural reinforcement. The green house, however, appeared to have a reinforced concrete frame.“Continuous steel rebar tied the columns, beams and foundation together into a single rigid skeleton,” the user explained. In simple terms, the concrete helps a building withstand heavy pressure, while the steel reinforcement helps it deal with pulling, bending and other forces.

Its location may have helped too

The construction may not be the whole story. The house also appeared to be slightly away from the deepest section of the debris flow and possibly on somewhat higher ground. That could have reduced the direct force hitting the structure. Its compact shape may have helped as well. Instead of taking the full force of the water and debris head-on, the flow appears to have moved around both sides of the building. The debris piling up around the house may even have offered some protection.According to the explanation shared on X, the mud and debris “quickly built a natural ramp”, which may have helped redirect later surges away from the structure. These remain possible explanations, rather than a confirmed engineering assessment of the building.

    One house, surrounded by destruction

The image of the green house standing almost untouched while the area around it was battered by the floods has understandably caught people’s attention. But behind the striking photograph is a family that spent hours simply trying to stay alive. For Pandey and her family, the fact that the house survived is significant. More than anything, though, they survived with it.After an earthquake had already tested the family years earlier, another disaster arrived at their doorstep. This time, they climbed upstairs, waited out the flood and lived to tell the story.
