Sylvester Stallone has been getting quite candid about his life. Along with the release of his brand-new memoir, ‘The Steps,’ the ‘Tulsa King’ star recently looked back on his relationship with his father. He also opened up about becoming his father’s caregiver while he was battling prostate cancer and how the experience greatly affected him.
Sylvester Stallone recalls caring for his father
During a recent interview on ‘CBS Sunday Morning at 92NY,’ the actor was asked about his parents, his bond with them, their passing, and whether he was able to ‘make his peace’ with them. The ‘Rocky’ star revealed that while that never happened with his mother, Jackie Stallone, things were a little different when it came to his father, Frank Stallone Sr.Stallone recalled, “Don’t know if you call it peace, not my mother. It was just, no. But my father, he was Rambo, you know? He was really a scary, tough guy. I remember once we were sitting at the table. I told you how tough the guy was. So he sees this like a pheasant bird, some scrawny thing, literally puts his fork down, picks up a shotgun, boom, shoots it, and brings it into the house, in the kitchen. I’m still at the table with a fork, watching. Pulls it open and eats.”He further added, “But I’m telling you, he was a different breed,” continuing to share that despite all of this, things were a lot different for him when he saw his father in 1993. He recalled that this was around the time he had started dealing with cancer. “Now I’m picking him off the sheets. It was quite a horrible revelation, because now I was the father and he was the oldest child, you know what I mean? He said something—boy, he got a lot of nerves. He goes, ‘I want you to be nice to people.’ I go, ‘Really?’ I mean, I’m serious,” Stallone shared.The 80-year-old also shared that at times like this, people have enlightenment in their lives, which seemed to be the case for his father, whom he had started taking care of regularly. He further shared that his father told him once, “‘I really was stupid. I did this; I did that. And I wasted it all; I could have had my son with love.’ But something postpones that. And I think his parents were pretty rough. They didn’t talk to each other. My grandmother, they sat there at the table for maybe 35 years. I never heard her say one word.”

Stallone also admitted during the interview that despite everything, he has forgiven his parents. For context, the actor has shared multiple times over the years about how abusive his parents were while he was growing up. He added, “It doesn’t do you any good, and I think it makes you sort of a better person, and it kind of frees you up. Because this thing is a volatile situation to carry around in you. It’s like having a hot brick in your heart. Okay, it was terrible; you weren’t good. But I’m not going to let you continue to dwell in my brain as a horrible guy.”Frank Stallone Sr. passed away at the age of 91 in Wellington, Florida, following a long battle with prostate cancer. His mother, Jackie Stallone, passed away on September 21, 2020, at the age of 98.
