Who is Frances Haugen? The Facebook whistleblower who exposed Meta’s teen safety concerns and the dark side of social media |

Who is Frances Haugen? The Facebook whistleblower who exposed Meta’s teen safety concerns and the dark side of social media
The Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen testifying to a Senate committee.

Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning arrived in US cinemas on 9 October, putting the Facebook whistleblower back in the spotlight five years after she first came forward. The film follows how Frances Haugen worked with a Wall Street Journal reporter to expose the company’s most closely guarded secrets. Mikey Madison plays Haugen, Jeremy Allen White plays reporter Jeff Horwitz, and Jeremy Strong takes over the role of Mark Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg. The real story began in 2021. Haugen, a former product manager on Facebook’s civic integrity team, left the company in May of that year. Before she did, she copied thousands of pages of internal research and gave them to the Wall Street Journal, which published them as the Facebook Files. She also filed complaints with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, revealed her identity on 60 Minutes, and testified before a Senate subcommittee in October 2021.Her argument was simple: the company’s own researchers had identified problems, and she believed those warnings weren’t leading to enough change. Only outside pressure, she said, would force it.

    What the documents showed

The internal research covered three main areas:Instagram and teenagers. Company studies, as reported by the Journal, found that Instagram worsened body-image concerns for some teenage girls.Algorithms and division. Documents suggested that ranking systems rewarded content that provoked strong reactions, including political outrage.Platform misuse. Staff had flagged harmful activity on Facebook’s services in several countries and questioned whether the company was doing enough to stop it.Meta disputed how the documents were characterised. It said the research was selectively quoted, that it had invested heavily in safety, and that it had been building protections for younger users for years.

    Why it still matters

Haugen’s disclosures landed as lawmakers were already losing patience with the tech industry, and they became a reference point in later debates. In the US, they fed into lawsuits and hearings over youth safety. Elsewhere, regulators went further: the EU’s Digital Services Act imposes new duties on large platforms, and Australia has moved to restrict social media for under-16s.Rules like these come with trade-offs. Protecting young users has to be weighed against privacy and access to information, and enforcing any law across borders is difficult.

    The film

Her story is now the basis for The Social Reckoning, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, who also wrote The Social Network. Mikey Madison plays Haugen, Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeremy Allen White plays Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. In an interview with TIME, Haugen spoke about how the film portrays her and how a serious illness earlier in her life changed her appetite for risk.

    Beyond social media

Haugen has also compared the social media era to the current race to build AI. She argues that safety and commercial success aren’t opposites, and that outside oversight can push companies toward better long-term choices. Her case also shows how much depends on insiders. Employees often see risks long before the public does, and what happens next turns on whether companies are open to scrutiny and willing to act on what their own people find.Meta has disputed aspects of the criticism and points to its existing teen safety measures.Disclaimer: Allegations and assessments concerning Meta’s practices are attributed to their respective sources. Meta has highlighted its existing safety measures and disputed aspects of the criticism.
