Shreveport's former Libbey Glass plant left more than 850,000 sq ft of contaminated industrial space; after cleanup, full demolition is moving ahead with about 95% of its steel, brick and concrete set for recycling

Full-scale structural demolition is under way at the former Libbey Glass plant in Shreveport after specialist crews successfully cleared industrial contaminants across more than 850,000 square feet of floor space. The milestone, announced by the North Louisiana Economic Partnership (NLEP) and reported by KEDM Public Radio and KSLA, removes the primary environmental barrier to redeveloping the 54-acre industrial property at 4302 Jewella Avenue. Known as the I-20 Legacy Site, the location is being prepared to host new commercial and industrial employers along one of North Louisiana’s most strategic transport corridors. Work at the site began with targeted abatement activities before expanding into full environmental remediation. With hazardous materials now safely extracted, heavy machinery is moving across the property to dismantle the remaining structural frames and overhead infrastructure.

Dismantling prominent local landmarks along Jewella Avenue

Local residents and motorists traveling along Jewella Avenue will soon witness the most visible phase of the project as demolition teams tear down the massive industrial silos that have dominated the skyline for decades. Crews operated by Nabors Demolition LLC initiated preliminary site preparation in April 2026. Following the official confirmation of complete environmental clearance, structural teardowns are accelerating across the entire 850,000-square-foot footprint. Project schedules published by the NLEP show that full demolition and ground-level preparation work will continue through mid-2027. Rather than hauling the demolished structures directly to regional landfills, contractors are sorting and crushing materials directly on-site. According to the NLEP, approximately 95 per cent of all concrete, brick, and structural steel salvaged from the plant will be recycled for future construction projects. This process significantly reduces municipal waste while lowering the overall environmental footprint of the clearing operation.

    Transforming a historic industrial footprint

The Jewella Avenue complex originally served as a manufacturing plant for glass tableware giant Libbey Glass, which operated at the site for nearly five decades. Operations at the facility ceased at the end of 2020 following corporate bankruptcy restructuring, leaving behind one of the largest vacant industrial properties in Caddo Parish. To prevent the vast complex from deteriorating into a permanent brownfield, the NLEP stepped in to acquire the property in September 2025. By taking direct control of the site, the regional economic development group sought to eliminate environmental liabilities and accelerate the timeline required to bring new manufacturing, logistics, or distribution jobs back to Shreveport. The property features direct rail access and immediate proximity to Interstate 20, making it a prime candidate for heavy industrial or logistics operations once the land is fully cleared and graded.

Creating new economic opportunities for North Louisiana

Economic leaders consider the physical cleanup of the property a necessary investment to keep North Louisiana competitive for national and international business expansion projects. In a statement provided to KEDM Public Radio, NLEP President Justyn Dixon explained that converting former industrial plants into development-ready acreage is vital for attracting modern employers who require fast construction schedules. “The work being completed at the I-20 Legacy Site is about more than demolition,” Dixon said. “It is about creating opportunity. Every step toward site readiness increases our ability to attract new industry, support existing businesses, and build a stronger economic future for the region.” By taking on the risk of environmental remediation and site clearance upfront, local development officials aim to present potential buyers with a pad-ready location free of legacy liabilities.

    Ongoing coordination and future outlook

The multi-year redevelopment strategy represents a joint effort between regional development authorities, municipal leaders, and state agencies. Support for the initiative includes partnership from the City of Shreveport, Caddo Parish, and regional economic financing partners. As heavy equipment continues to work through the site, local authorities are advising nearby residents to expect continued truck traffic around Jewella Avenue through the completion target in mid-2027. Further announcements regarding potential industrial buyers or tenant recruitments for the I-20 Legacy Site are expected once site clearing approaches its final stages.
