5 things people do at temples that have a deeper meaning than you think

For many people, a temple visit does not come with a handbook. You grow up watching your parents do certain things, then start doing them yourself. Shoes come off at the entrance, a bell is rung, hands are folded before the deity and prasad is taken before leaving. After years of doing the same things, it is easy to see them as routine. But many of these familiar temple practices have a thought or belief behind them that is easy to miss.

    1. Removing your footwear before entering

The first thing you do at many temples is leave your footwear outside. Yes, there is the obvious reason of keeping the temple floor clean, but there is also a simpler idea attached to it. You leave behind something that belongs to the outside world before stepping into a place of worship. Everyone does the same thing, whether they have arrived in expensive shoes or simple slippers. For a few minutes, what you wear, what you own or what you do for a living does not matter. You enter barefoot, like everyone else.

    2. Ringing the bell

That loud bell near the entrance is almost impossible to ignore, especially when several people ring it one after another. In many Hindu traditions, ringing the bell is associated with beginning worship and drawing one’s attention towards the divine. There is a practical side to the ritual too: the sound can break the chain of thoughts you were carrying from outside. You might have walked in worrying about work, money or a family problem, but the moment that bell rings, your attention shifts. For those few seconds, you are actually present in the temple.

    3. Going around the deity

You may have seen devotees take a round around the shrine after praying. This is called pradakshina or parikrama, and the direction and number of rounds can vary depending on the deity and tradition. At its heart is the idea of keeping the deity at the centre while you move around it. There is a quiet message in that act. For once, you are not placing your own concerns at the centre of everything. You walk slowly, pray and make your way back, often taking a little more time than you would if you were simply there for darshan.

    4. Bringing an offering

A visit to the temple often begins with carrying something in your hands: flowers, fruits, sweets, a coconut or another offering. It is easy to think of this as something you bring because that is what people have always done. But offering something before asking for a blessing has its own significance. It creates a moment of giving instead of only asking. What you offer need not be expensive or elaborate. The thought behind it matters more than the size of the offering, which is why even a small bunch of flowers can have a place in someone’s prayer.

    5. Taking prasad after darshan

There is something almost childlike about waiting for prasad at a temple. Sometimes it is a small piece of ladoo, a little halwa, fruit or something else that has been offered during worship. But devotees do not usually treat it like an ordinary sweet picked up on the way home. It is received carefully and eaten with respect because it has first been offered to the deity. The word prasad itself is linked with the idea of a gracious gift or blessing. So that tiny portion handed to you at the end of a temple visit carries a meaning that goes well beyond its taste.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
