5 things to reflect on when you find yourself comparing your life with others
5 things to reflect on when you find yourself comparing your life with others

Sometimes, all it takes is one Instagram scroll to make you question your own life. A friend gets promoted, someone announces their wedding, or a former classmate achieves something you have been working towards for years. You may be happy for them, but a small part of you wonders, “When will it happen for me?”If you find yourself feeling this way, take a step back. Instead of being hard on yourself, reflect on these five things.

    1. Am I seeing their whole life or just the good parts?

It is easy to assume someone has everything figured out when you only see their achievements. But you rarely know what they are dealing with behind closed doors. Their journey has struggles you may never see, just as yours does.

    2. Do I really want what they have?

Sometimes, we start chasing things simply because everyone around us seems to have them. Before feeling left behind, ask yourself whether you genuinely want that career, relationship or lifestyle, or whether you feel pressured to want it.

    3. Am I forgetting how far I have come?

When you focus on what others have achieved, you can easily overlook your own progress. Think about what you have learnt, the difficult phases you have overcome and the ways you have grown. Not every achievement needs to be visible to count.

    4. Am I putting a deadline on my life?

It can feel uncomfortable when everyone seems to be moving ahead at a different pace. But there is no single timeline for finding love, building a career or feeling settled. Being somewhere different from your friends does not mean you are doing something wrong.

    5. Can I celebrate someone else without doubting myself?

Someone else’s success can sometimes remind you of what you are still waiting for. It is okay to feel that disappointment. But remember, their good news does not make your own dreams any less possible. You can be happy for someone while still hoping for something better for yourself.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
