In 2024, the country’s first nationwide scientific assessment estimated that 718 snow leopards inhabit the Indian Himalayas across Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. It was one of the first reliable reports for monitoring one of the world’s most elusive big cats.
