Most students spend years preparing for either medicine or engineering. Very few dare to pursue both. And fewer still manage to excel in each. But Nikhil Sadineni has done exactly that—turning what many would consider an impossible academic journey into an inspiring success story.Nikhil first made headlines in 2017 by securing All India Rank (AIR) 55 in NEET UG, earning admission to the prestigious AIIMS Delhi for his MBBS. While most medical students would have focused entirely on becoming doctors, Nikhil saw something else on the horizon. He believed that Artificial Intelligence would transform healthcare, and instead of waiting for the future to arrive, he decided to prepare for it.

While studying MBBS, he quietly enrolled at IIT Madras

Medical school is often described as one of the most demanding academic programmes in the country. Yet, while pursuing MBBS at AIIMS Delhi, Nikhil took on another challenge that surprised many.He enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Data Science and Applications offered by IIT Madras, balancing two rigorous degree programmes simultaneously. His decision wasn’t driven by curiosity alone. As he studied medicine, he realised that AI, machine learning and data science would soon become integral to disease diagnosis, medical imaging, patient care and hospital systems. Rather than choosing between medicine and technology, he chose to master both. The effort paid off. Nikhil graduated from IIT Madras with an outstanding CGPA of 9.82, building expertise in deep learning, large language models (LLMs), reinforcement learning, big data, full-stack development and data structures—all while completing his MBBS.

Then came another milestone—AIR 1 in GATE Data Science & AI

For most students, completing MBBS would be the end of a long academic journey. For Nikhil, it was only the beginning of another. In GATE 2025, he secured All India Rank 1 in the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA) paper, one of the country’s most competitive postgraduate entrance examinations. The achievement opened the doors to another premier institution—the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, where he is currently pursuing an M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence. His academic path is remarkable because it bridges two disciplines that are increasingly shaping the future together. Instead of viewing medicine and engineering as separate worlds, Nikhil has built a career at their intersection.

Why medicine and AI may be the next big career combination

Nikhil’s journey also reflects a larger shift taking place in healthcare.Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming how diseases are diagnosed, medical records are analysed and treatment decisions are supported. From AI-assisted radiology to predictive healthcare and medical coding, technology is becoming an indispensable part of modern medicine.Having experienced both worlds firsthand, Nikhil worked as a Junior Resident at AIIMS Delhi before joining XpertDox, a US-based medical informatics company. There, he contributed to improving natural language processing (NLP) systems designed to make medical coding more accurate and efficient. He later served as the company’s Director of Medical Informatics, applying both his clinical knowledge and AI expertise to solve real-world healthcare challenges.Today, as he pursues advanced studies in Artificial Intelligence at IISc Bangalore, Nikhil continues to demonstrate how interdisciplinary learning can unlock entirely new career paths. His story carries an important message for students preparing for competitive exams. Success isn’t always about choosing one field over another. Sometimes, it’s about recognising where two disciplines meet—and having the courage to pursue both. From securing AIR 55 in NEET, earning an MBBS from AIIMS Delhi, completing a BS in Data Science from IIT Madras, achieving AIR 1 in GATE 2025, and now pursuing an M.Tech in AI at IISc Bangalore, Nikhil Sadineni’s journey shows that the future belongs to learners who are willing to step beyond traditional boundaries.Disclaimer: This article is based on information shared publicly by Nikhil Sadineni through professional profiles and publicly available records.
