NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump became one of the biggest talking points after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 final at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.Trump stood alongside the Spain players as they received the World Cup trophy and remained on the podium during the celebrations. Trump only stepped aside after FIFA president Gianni Infantino pulled him away, allowing captain Rodri to lift the trophy with his teammates. The moment quickly went viral on social media.The US President also handed the FIFA World Cup trophy to the Spanish players after the final at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Boos greet Trump during trophy ceremony
Boos echoed around the stadium when Trump and Infantino walked onto the field for the trophy presentation after the match. Trump, who had arrived at the stadium by helicopter, congratulated players with handshakes as they walked across the stage before standing with Spain’s squad during the trophy presentation.

Spain beat defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time thanks to substitute Ferran Torres’ goal in the 106th minute.Spain dominated possession and created far more chances throughout the match, while Lionel Messi‘s Argentina managed to force extra time before finally conceding.Torres reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box and fired a left-footed shot under the crossbar to seal Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, their first since 2010.
Trump’s earlier World Cup controversy
Trump had earlier found himself at the centre of controversy during the tournament after calling FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the red card shown to US striker Folarin Balogun in the group-stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.Balogun’s one-match suspension was later lifted, allowing him to play in the Round of 16 against Belgium, where the United States lost 4-1.
