Parents in the US consistently rank among the world's unhappiest. Here's what psychologists and researchers say is behind it

Parenthood is often described as one of life’s greatest joys, but new findings suggest that the experience can be far more complex, especially in the United States. According to the World Happiness Report 2025, published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford in partnership with Gallup, the United Nations, and an independent editorial board of leading economists and psychologists, American parents consistently report lower levels of happiness than adults without children and parents in many other high-income countries. The report draws on Gallup World Poll data collected over multiple years, offering one of the most comprehensive assessments of global well-being. Researchers stress that this does not mean American parents love their children any less. Instead, it reflects growing pressures such as rising childcare costs, financial strain, limited social support and the increasing demands of modern parenting. Scroll down to find out why experts believe parenthood has become more challenging for many families in the US.

It’s not parenting itself, it’s parenting in America

Research consistently shows that the “parent happiness gap” varies dramatically from country to country. In nations with stronger social safety nets, affordable childcare and generous parental leave, parents often report levels of happiness that are similar to or even higher than non-parents.

How do you teach children about money and financial responsibility?

    2

The United States tells a different story. Compared with many other high-income countries, American families receive relatively limited paid parental leave, face high childcare costs and often shoulder the responsibility of balancing careers and parenting with less institutional support. Psychologists argue that these structural pressures, rather than children themselves, are what make parenting especially difficult.

The financial pressure never seems to end

One of the biggest contributors is money. From childcare and healthcare to education and housing, the cost of raising a child in the US continues to rise. Many parents find themselves juggling multiple financial responsibilities while worrying about their children’s future.Financial strain has long been linked to chronic stress, anxiety and lower life satisfaction. When everyday parenting decisions become tied to economic uncertainty, even joyful moments can feel overshadowed by constant pressure.

The pressure to be a ‘perfect parent’

Modern parenting has also become more intensive. Experts say today’s parents are expected to be endlessly available, emotionally responsive, academically involved and socially engaged. Social media often amplifies these expectations, presenting carefully curated images of seemingly flawless families.

Psychologists refer to this as intensive parenting, where mothers and fathers feel responsible for optimising every aspect of a child’s development. While well-intentioned, this mindset can leave parents exhausted, guilty and feeling as though they are never doing enough.

    Parenting has become lonelier

Previous generations often raised children within larger family networks or close-knit neighbourhoods. Today, many American parents live far from relatives and depend on smaller support systems. Without grandparents, neighbours or community members regularly sharing childcare responsibilities, parents are left carrying much of the emotional and practical workload alone.Researchers increasingly point to social isolation as one of the strongest predictors of lower well-being. The famous Harvard Study of Adult Development has repeatedly found that strong, supportive relationships remain one of the greatest protectors of long-term happiness and mental health.

Work-life balance remains a constant struggle

Unlike many developed nations, the US does not guarantee extensive paid parental leave at the national level, and many employees return to work shortly after childbirth. For working parents, especially those with young children, this often creates an exhausting cycle of deadlines, school schedules, childcare logistics and household responsibilities. Psychologists say this constant role-switching leaves little time for rest or recovery, increasing the risk of burnout over time.

Happiness isn’t only about having children

Importantly, researchers caution against interpreting these findings to mean that children make people unhappy. Studies show that parents often experience greater meaning, purpose and emotional fulfilment through raising children, even if their day-to-day stress levels are higher. Happiness and meaning are not always the same thing. A life filled with responsibility can be deeply rewarding while also being emotionally demanding.

Better support can make all the difference

Research suggests that parents fare much better when they have access to affordable childcare, paid leave, flexible workplaces and strong community support. The broader evidence from global well-being research also reinforces a simple idea: people thrive when they feel connected and supported. The latest World Happiness Report highlights that social trust, caring relationships and supportive communities are among the strongest predictors of happiness across countries. In other words, psychologists argue that the conversation should not be about whether people should become parents. It should focus on how societies can make parenting less overwhelming. When families receive practical support instead of carrying every burden alone, both parents and children stand to benefit.
