Fired by Indian IT firm with no warning, no feedback: Engineer's exit story strikes a chord online
5 minutes late for a doctor’s visit, then fired for ‘poor performance’: engineer’s post sparks outrage

Stories about workplace culture often strike a chord because they reflect situations many employees worry about but rarely speak about openly. From performance reviews to the way exits are handled, conversations around transparency at work continue to find a place on social media. A recent Reddit post has now added to that discussion, with a software engineer sharing why the end of their job left them with more questions than answers.According to the post, the engineer said their contract at an Indian IT services company was ended just six months after joining. The employee claimed the reason given was poor performance, but said they were never shown how that conclusion was reached or provided with any formal feedback before the decision.

    Employee questions the performance assessment

The engineer said they tried to understand how their work had been evaluated and asked the company what information had been used to reach its decision. According to the post, they also questioned why the client team they worked with regularly had not been asked to share feedback. The engineer wrote, “I asked what data points they used to evaluate my performance. I delivered 40 stories out of the last 90 stories released by the team, with a team size of seven.”The employee also disagreed with claims that their work had too many bugs. They said several production issues counted against them had actually been assigned later because they affected live systems and required immediate attention.

Other concerns raised in the post

The Reddit user also said arriving about five minutes late for daily stand-up meetings because of a medical appointment was later cited as a performance issue.According to the engineer, both the engineering manager and the client team already knew about the appointment and had not raised any concerns. The post also criticized mandatory AI training sessions, with the employee saying the training had little connection to the team’s actual work. Another concern raised was that remote employees were expected to keep their Slack and Microsoft Teams status active throughout the workday.Describing how the experience felt, the engineer wrote, “I’m just sad about how this was done. No warning. No feedback. No transparency. No notice. No evaluation shared.”

    Reddit users share their views

The post drew several reactions from Reddit users, many of whom felt employees should receive better communication before a contract is terminated. One user wrote, “Name and shame the company. This culture has to change.”Another commented, “Unfortunately, many service-based companies still treat remote employees this way.”A third user said, “Performance reviews should include client feedback, especially if the client works with you every day.”Another added, “You deserve better. I hope you find a company that values your work instead of monitoring your online status.”While a few users felt there could be more to the situation than what was shared in the post, many said employees deserve clear feedback, transparency, and a fair chance to improve before losing their jobs.Disclaimer: This report is based on a Reddit post and reflects the personal account of the individual who shared it.
