JJ Valaya’s SIDDI was a love letter to heritage, craft and timeless couture

JJ Valaya's SIDDI was a love letter to heritage, craft and timeless couture

There are fashion shows that impress you the moment the lights come on. Then there are the ones that stay with you long after the runway is empty.JJ Valaya‘s SIDDI, presented at Hyundai India Couture Week 2026, belonged to the second kind.Nothing about the evening felt rushed. The collection unfolded at its own pace, almost asking the audience to slow down and really look. Not just at the embroidery or the silhouettes, but at the ideas stitched into every garment. That has always been JJ Valaya’s strength. His clothes don’t chase trends, and they certainly don’t shout for attention. They carry themselves with quiet confidence. Even after more than three decades in fashion, he continues to prove that true luxury isn’t about excess – it’s about knowing exactly when to stop. This season, the inspiration came from the Siddis of India, a community with African roots that gradually became part of the country’s cultural fabric over generations. It could easily have turned into a history lesson on the runway.Instead, Valaya took a far more thoughtful route.Rather than recreating traditional clothing or relying on obvious references, he explored something much more universal, the way cultures travel, meet one another and slowly become intertwined. It was a collection about journeys, identity and belonging, but none of it felt forced. The story revealed itself naturally as the looks moved down the runway. The clothes spoke before the concept did.Lehengas shimmered under the lights without ever feeling overly ornate. Fluid anarkalis brought softness to the lineup, while contemporary sarees offered a lighter, more effortless take on occasion dressing. On the menswear side, sherwanis and bandhgalas carried the sharp tailoring and regal ease that have become signatures of the House of Valaya. Then there was the craftsmanship. This is where the collection truly came alive. From a distance, the garments looked luxurious. Up close, they became something else entirely. Tiny details emerged with every step – aari work tucked between layers of embroidery, delicate dori work tracing intricate patterns, crystals catching the light for just a moment before disappearing again. These weren’t clothes that revealed everything at first glance. They rewarded attention.

(JJ Valaya unveils Autumn/Winter showcase at India Couture Week 2026)The colour palette stayed beautifully restrained. Ivory, champagne and antique gold formed the backbone of the collection, while rich jewel tones, noir and earthy shades added depth without overpowering the eye. There wasn’t a single colour that felt out of place or included simply to make a statement. One of the evening’s most memorable moments came in the form of the Valaya Shifting Leaves Chevron.Originally created for his daughter Hoorvi’s wedding, the piece has always held personal significance. Seeing it translated onto the couture runway added another layer to its story. Dressed in black, beige and metallic tones, it didn’t demand applause. It quietly earned it.Perhaps that’s what makes JJ Valaya’s work so enduring. His collections never feel like they’re trying to prove anything. They’re confident enough to let craftsmanship take centre stage. In an era where fashion often leans on spectacle, oversized sets and viral moments, SIDDI chose a different path. It trusted the embroidery. It trusted the tailoring. Most importantly, it trusted the audience to appreciate the finer details. The show also marked another milestone for the designer with the launch of a new High Couture Bridal Space in New Delhi, a fitting step as the label prepares to complete 35 years next year. It felt symbolic – a house looking ahead while staying firmly connected to everything it has built over the decades.Speaking about the collection, JJ Valaya described SIDDI as a reflection on movement, memory and identity, inspired by the journey of the Siddis of India. Rather than interpreting a community through costume, he chose to explore how cultures evolve over time and how those shared histories can be expressed through couture.By the finale, one thing had become clear. SIDDI wasn’t designed to chase the next big bridal trend or create a single viral runway moment. It celebrated patience. Patience in craftsmanship. Patience in storytelling.Patience in creating clothes that people will remember years from now, not because they were loud, but because they meant something. And perhaps that’s the rarest luxury fashion has to offer today.
