From ‘6-7’ to ‘aura farming’: 10 Gen Z slang terms you’ll keep seeing online in 2026 and what they mean

If you have spent even a few minutes scrolling through Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube comments lately, you may have noticed that the internet seems to have developed its own language. One minute someone is “locked in”; the next they are “cooked.” Someone can gain “aura” by doing something effortlessly cool and lose it just as quickly by making an awkward move. Then there is “6-7,” a phrase that somehow became a huge internet joke without having one clear meaning.Internet slang changes fast, but some terms have become common enough to keep appearing across social media in 2026. Here are 10 you are likely to come across and what people actually mean when they use them.

    1. 6-7

This might be the most confusing one on the list because there is no single, straightforward definition.“6-7” became a viral expression and is often used as a random reaction, joke, or interruption. Its appeal comes largely from the absurdity of saying it, rather than from any literal meaning. The phrase was already widely circulating in 2025 and continues to appear in 2026 slang guides and discussions.Example: “I asked him how the exam went, and he just said, ‘6-7.’”

    2. Aura farming

“Aura” refers to someone’s perceived coolness, confidence, or presence. “Aura farming” takes that idea a step further. It describes deliberately doing something that makes you appear impressive, effortlessly cool, or mysterious, especially when other people are watching.Example: “He walked into the room, put on his sunglasses and didn’t say a word. That’s serious aura farming.”The phrase remains prominent in 2026 slang discussions and has been documented by dictionary sources.

    3. Cooked

If someone says, “I’m cooked,” they usually mean they are in trouble, exhausted, or have little chance of recovering from a situation. It can be dramatic and completely harmless when used jokingly.Example: “I have an exam at 9am and haven’t studied a single chapter. I’m cooked.”The opposite can also appear in the form “I’m cooking,” meaning someone is doing well or making progress.

    4. Crash out

“Crash out” means losing your temper, becoming extremely upset, or reacting impulsively.Online, it is often used humorously for relatively minor frustrations, although the phrase can also describe more serious emotional or reckless behaviour.Example: “They cancelled my order after an hour. I’m about to crash out.”

    5. Locked in

Being “locked in” means being completely focused on something. It is commonly used when someone decides to stop getting distracted and take a task seriously.Example: “My exams start next week. I’m officially locked in.”The phrase continues to appear among commonly reported youth slang in 2026.

    6. Unc

“Unc” is short for “uncle” and is usually used teasingly.Online, someone might be called “unc” when they seem old, outdated, or unable to understand the latest trend. And the joke is that you do not necessarily have to be old to earn the title.Example: “He asked what 6-7 meant. Everyone in the comments called him unc.”The term is commonly reported in current Gen Z and Gen Alpha slang guides.

    7. Mog

To “mog” someone means to outshine them, particularly in appearance, physical presence, or overall presentation. It is often used online when one person in a picture or video is perceived to stand out compared with everyone else.Example: “Everyone looked great in the photo, but she completely mogged us.”“Mogging” continues to appear in 2026 slang references, alongside terms such as “aura farming” and “chopped.”

    8. Chopped

This one is considerably less flattering. If someone says a person looks “chopped,” they are essentially saying that the person looks unattractive or rough, usually in a blunt and often joking way.Example: “I tried cutting my own hair, and now I look chopped.”Because it can be insulting, this is one term best understood rather than casually used with people you do not know well. Current slang references continue to list it among youth internet vocabulary.

    9. Glazing

“Glazing” means praising or hyping someone up far more than seems necessary. It is generally used when the praise starts looking excessive, especially when someone keeps defending or complimenting another person online.Example: “You’ve been praising that actor for 20 minutes. Stop glazing.”The term is included among slang reported by teachers and current youth-language references in 2026.

    10. Brain rot

“Brain rot” describes the feeling of consuming so much repetitive, absurd, or low-value internet content that it starts affecting the way you talk, think, or communicate. The term can also be used for the content itself.Example: “I’ve watched reels for four hours, and now I’m quoting memes in real life. I have brain rot.”The phrase has become closely associated with the wider internet culture that has produced many of the slang terms above.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
