5 smart ways to use empty tin cans at home instead of throwing them away

Every kitchen ends up with a small pile of empty tin cans over the course of a month—tomato puree, condensed milk, baked beans, coconut milk, and most of them go straight into the recycling bin or, worse, the regular trash without a second thought. But a clean, sturdy tin can is genuinely useful material: it’s rustproof enough to survive outdoors for a while, easy to paint or decorate, and the right shape for a surprising number of everyday household fixes. Instead of tossing the next one out, here are five smart, low-effort ways to give it a second life around the house.

Turn them into planters for herbs and succulents

A cleaned-out tin can makes a genuinely good small planter, especially for herbs, succulents, or cuttings that don’t need a lot of root space. Once the label is peeled off and the inside is rinsed thoroughly, punch or drill a few small drainage holes in the base so water doesn’t sit and rot the roots. A coat of paint or a strip of jute twine wrapped around the outside instantly makes it look intentional rather than recycled, and a row of painted cans lined up on a kitchen windowsill can hold everything from mint and coriander to a small chili plant.

Desk and kitchen organisers for everyday clutter

Tin cans are close to the perfect shape for corralling all the small things that usually end up loose in a drawer. On a desk, one can easily hold pens, scissors, and rulers upright and within reach; in the kitchen, a slightly larger can works well for wooden spoons, spatulas, and whisks standing by the stove. Grouping two or three cans of different heights together, wrapped in matching fabric or paint, turns a purely functional fix into something that looks deliberately styled rather than makeshift.

Punched-tin lanterns for a warm evening glow

This is one of the more satisfying weekend projects a tin can can be turned into. Fill the can with water and freeze it solid, which keeps the metal from denting while you work, then use a hammer and a nail to punch a simple pattern of holes into the sides, dots, spirals, or even a rough star shape all work well. Once it thaws out and dries, drop in a tea light, and the can becomes a small lantern that throws a scattering of warm light through the punched holes, perfect for a balcony or a garden table in the evening.

Wall-mounted storage for nails, screws, and craft bits

For anyone with a workbench, a hobby corner, or just a drawer full of loose nails and screws, tin cans make excellent mounted storage. Screwing or gluing the base of several cans to a piece of wood or directly onto a wall, in a small row, keeps hardware, paintbrushes, or craft supplies sorted and visible instead of buried in a box. It’s a genuinely practical fix for small workshops or balcony storage units, and it costs nothing beyond the cans you were already going to throw away.

    Simple hanging bird feeders

A tin can with a couple of holes punched near the rim and a length of wire or sturdy string threaded through can be hung from a tree branch, balcony railing, or hook as an easy bird feeder. Fill it with birdseed or grain, and it holds up far better outdoors than a paper or cardboard container would, standing up to rain without falling apart. It’s a small way to bring some birdlife closer to a balcony or garden, and it reuses something that would otherwise have gone straight into the bin.

    Disclaimer:

Cut or punctured tin cans can have sharp edges, so sand down the rim, cover it with tape, or use a smooth-edge can opener before handling. Avoid reusing cans that previously held chemicals or non-food items for anything involving food or edible plants, and let painted cans dry fully before use.
