Most children are asked to finish their vegetables. Eleven-year-old Lu Zikuan was asked to eat far more than he ever wanted to. Not because he was underweight or because his parents wanted him to grow taller. He needed to gain enough weight to save his father’s life.In an extraordinary story from China’s Henan province, Lu transformed his own body over three months so he could become eligible to donate bone marrow to his father, who was battling a life-threatening blood disorder. His determination, sacrifice and quiet maturity have continued to touch millions around the world, not just because of what he did, but because of what it reveals about the strength of family bonds.

How do you teach children about money and financial responsibility?

As per China Daily and various media reports, Lu Zikuan’s father, Lu Yanheng, had been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome. It is a rare bone marrow disorder often considered an early stage of leukemia (blood cancer), in 2012. Doctors recommended a bone marrow transplant, but the family could not afford the expensive treatment. Hoping medication would keep the disease under control, they delayed the procedure. But as his condition worsened in 2018, doctors made it clear that a transplant was now the only realistic chance of saving his life. One of his three children, 11-year-old Lu Zikuan, turned out to be a perfect bone marrow match. Then came another obstacle. The surgery required the donor to weigh around 50 kilograms. Lu weighed barely 30 kilograms. He was simply too small to donate safely.

An 11-year-old made an adult decision

Even after doctors explained that donating bone marrow would involve several injections and multiple blood draws, the son never hesitated. Instead, he said, “Since my father can’t support the family, I should be a ‘little man’ and take responsibility until he recovers,” he said. “I have a lot of blood. Draw mine,” according to the China Daily.

Five meals a day with one goal

From that day on, eating became Lu’s full-time job. His routine changed completely. Breakfast consisted of three eggs, a large steamed bun, a bowl of porridge and a carton of milk. Lunch included braised meat, rice and vegetables. Dinner came in double portions with meat, boiled eggs, noodles and milk. In all, he was eating around five meals a day.A widely shared video showed Lu stuffing rice and meat into his mouth until his cheeks bulged before continuing with more food. “I would only put down my chopsticks when I could no longer eat,” he recalled. After every meal, he rushed to the weighing scale, announced his weight loudly and celebrated every small increase. “If he ate too much, he would lie down in his room tossing and turning and drink some hawthorn water to help digest the food,” according to the media reports. His father later admitted how difficult it was to watch.“I tried to tell him to stop as he is too young and the irregular diet has caused him gastrointestinal disorders,” Lu Yanheng said. “But my son just comforted me and said that all the operation needs is just a little blood.”

Three months later, he was ready to donate

The determination paid off. Within one month, Lu had already gained about five kilograms. By July 2019, he had put on nearly 15 kilograms, reaching around 48 kilograms, enough for doctors to move ahead with the transplant.Around the same time, the family’s financial burden also eased after they received nearly 900,000 yuan through crowdfunding to cover treatment expenses. On September 9, doctors at a branch of Peking University People’s Hospital in Beijing successfully carried out the bone marrow transplant. The surgery was a success.

    “My task is complete”

According to China Daily and various media reports, the operation left Lu physically weak. He remained in hospital recovering while his father recovered separately. The two spoke over the phone. During one conversation, the young boy quietly told his father: “My task is complete, so it’s now up to you.” That sentence carried the emotional weight of everything he had endured over the previous months. Now that the surgery was over, Lu was relieved that he no longer had to force himself to eat. He returned to eating three normal meals a day with only half a bowl of rice at each meal.

    A father overwhelmed with gratitude

For Lu Yanheng, gratitude came mixed with guilt. He said his son had always been unusually responsible. Because the family had struggled financially for years, Lu never demanded toys, new clothes or pocket money. “I was not in good health and had no time to take care of my children, but he never bothered me with his studies. His grades have always been within the top five, and he’s still the class monitor in school,” his father said.“I really want to get better sooner and take my children to play in the mountains. He has been through a real tough time with me,” he said. “I hope he will have a good rest after the operation, and be at his normal weight again.”

    What this story teaches parents

Stories like Lu Zikuan’s often make people say, “What a brave child.” But they should also make us ask another question: How does an 11-year-old develop such empathy and courage?Children are not born understanding sacrifice. They learn it by watching the adults around them.Experts in child development often say that empathy grows through everyday experiences at home. Children notice how parents care for grandparents, how they respond when someone is sick, whether kindness is practised instead of merely preached, and whether family members support one another during difficult times.Lu’s story is not about expecting children to make extraordinary sacrifices. No parent would ever wish that on their child. Instead, it is a reminder that children absorb family values far more deeply than parents sometimes realise. In a world where parenting conversations often revolve around grades, extracurricular activities and screen time, Lu’s story reminds us that some of the most important lessons cannot be taught through lectures. Kindness, responsibility and compassion. And the belief that family stands together when life becomes difficult. Those are lessons children carry long after childhood and sometimes, as one remarkable 11-year-old showed, they become strong enough to help save a life.
