A teenager stole five Civil War cannonballs from a historic Alabama fort and tried to fly home with them in a suitcase, but TSA caught the unusual haul

A routine baggage screening at an Alabama airport turned into an extraordinary security incident after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers discovered five Civil War-era cannonballs hidden inside a checked suitcase. The rusted artillery relics, some as large as grapefruits and wrapped individually in paper towels, had allegedly been taken by a teenager from Fort Morgan, a historic military fort overlooking Mobile Bay. Unsure whether the cannonballs were live explosives, TSA officers immediately called bomb specialists and local law enforcement. The objects were later confirmed to be inert historical artefacts and were returned to the fort, bringing an unusual theft to an end before the passenger boarded the flight.

Historic cannonballs discovered during routine TSA baggage screening

The incident took place on 18 July 2026 at Gulf Shores International Airport in Alabama. Lead TSA Officer Justin Dupree noticed an unusual object while examining X-ray images of checked baggage. After opening the suitcase, officers found five rusted cannonballs wrapped in paper towels. Because it was impossible to determine immediately whether they contained explosives, the screening process was halted while specialists were called to assess the potential threat.Investigators soon determined that the cannonballs had been removed from Fort Morgan, a National Historic Landmark located at the entrance to Mobile Bay. Construction of the brick fort began in 1819 and was completed in 1834. It later played a crucial role during the Battle of Mobile Bay in the American Civil War and today serves as one of Alabama’s best-known historic attractions, preserving military artefacts from the 19th century.

Bomb specialists confirmed the cannonballs were not dangerous

The TSA contacted explosives experts along with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office after the discovery. Following a detailed inspection, authorities confirmed that all five cannonballs were inert, meaning they no longer contained explosive material. Although they posed no danger, officials said such items remain prohibited on commercial flights because security officers cannot determine whether artillery munitions are live simply by viewing them on an X-ray scanner.

Teen allegedly placed the relics inside his grandmother’s luggage

According to investigators, the cannonballs had allegedly been taken from Fort Morgan by a juvenile visiting the site. Authorities said the teenager placed the historic relics inside his grandmother’s checked suitcase before travelling to the airport. The unusual discovery transformed what appeared to be a normal family trip into a law enforcement investigation involving airport security officers, bomb specialists and heritage officials.

No criminal charges were filed after the artefacts were returned

Once investigators confirmed the cannonballs had been stolen from Fort Morgan, they were confiscated and returned to the historic site. The fort’s director ultimately decided not to pursue criminal charges against the teenager. However, officials stressed that removing artefacts from protected historic sites is illegal and can permanently damage places that preserve important chapters of American history.
