‘Absolute unity’: Insider exposes UEFA’s furious response inside emergency FIFA boycott meeting

European football’s opposition to FIFA’s proposed commercial restructuring intensified on Thursday after UEFA’s 55 member associations unanimously backed a boycott of FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups, should the governing body proceed with plans to sell a stake in the commercial rights to its tournaments. The decision followed an emergency meeting chaired by UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin, with European football presenting its strongest collective response yet to FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s proposal to establish a new commercial entity that would oversee the World Cup and other FIFA competitions. An insider present at the talks revealed there was “absolute unity” across all 55 member associations in rejecting the plan. The meeting comes just days after FIFA formally asked its 211 member associations to vote on the proposal before a September 19 deadline.

FIFA proposal remains at the centre of dispute

The dispute centres on FIFA’s plan to create FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a new commercial subsidiary that would own and manage the commercial rights to FIFA competitions, including broadcasting, sponsorship, ticketing, licensing and related businesses.Under the proposal, FIFA would retain majority ownership while selling up to a 20% minority, non-controlling stake in the company to external investors, valuing the business at approximately $20 billion. The governing body expects the sale to raise around $4.2 billion. To secure support, FIFA has promised each of its 211 member associations funding of up to $40 million if the proposal receives majority approval before the September 19 deadline.

The package includes an initial $20 million payment available from January 1, 2027, followed by a further $20 million through FIFA’s development programmes.Infantino has defended the proposal, describing it as part of the “democratisation of football worldwide” and arguing that it would generate greater financial support for football associations while allowing FIFA to retain control over governance and sporting matters.

    UEFA approves unified boycott position

Following Thursday’s emergency meeting, UEFA announced that every one of its 55 national associations had endorsed a common position opposing the proposal. The governing body confirmed that its members would boycott FIFA competitions for as long as the investment plan remained in place unless FIFA completely abandoned the proposal. In a statement released after the meeting, UEFA said:“Europe’s position is clear.“We will never lend this model our legitimacy. No one has the moral authority to sell what they merely hold in trust for the next generation.“As a result of today’s discussion, no UEFA national teams will participate in any FIFA competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership.“Nobody should be in any doubt: UEFA and its national associations will oppose these plans with absolute determination.“There are moments when institutions are judged not by what they are prepared to accept, but by what they refuse to compromise. This is one of those moments.“Some things are simply too important to sell. The FIFA World Cup belongs to football. It always will. And so long as Europe has a voice, it will never be for sale.”Shortly afterwards, the Football Association issued its own statement confirming that it supported UEFA’s position and opposed FIFA’s proposal.

    Insider describes unanimous opposition

An insider who was present at the meeting with all 55 UEFA member associations has revealed further details of the discussions, describing a rare moment of complete alignment across European football.Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, Professor Laura McAllister said there had been total unity in rejecting the proposal.“There was absolute unity about the need to stop this catastrophic proposal of selling off part of football to private equity,” she said. She argued that allowing private investment into FIFA’s flagship competitions would fundamentally change how football is governed.“This poses a genuine existential threat to the game because the minute you sell off part of the crown jewels of football, clearly private equity has very different objectives and motivations to those of us who are custodians of the game.”McAllister also warned that the long-term consequences would extend beyond the immediate financial benefits being offered to member associations.“UEFA and FIFA are not-for-profit organisations in that all of the money that is made through massive competitions like the World Cups goes straight back into football.“Even if you sell off 20% of the game, then that’s 20% you never get back. Once you’ve done it, you’ve done it, and it effectively undermines the whole ethical base of what we’re about in football.”Professor McAllister went on to say she “really hopes the boycotts don’t happen.”“I feel optimistic they won’t, because the reality is the powerhouse of world football is Europe.”Also read: European football chiefs identify strong candidate to challenge Gianni Infantino amid FIFA’s World Cup sell-off row

Opposition continues to build across European football

Thursday’s meeting represents the strongest escalation yet in the widening dispute between FIFA and European football.Earlier this week, UEFA accused FIFA of attempting to commercialise the game’s most valuable competitions without meaningful consultation, while the Football Association criticised the lack of transparency surrounding the proposal. The European Football Clubs organisation, which represents more than 850 clubs, also condemned FIFA’s handling of the plan, saying such a significant proposal should never have been introduced without proper consultation with the wider football community. The investment proposal has also prompted senior European football officials to begin discussing potential alternatives to Infantino’s leadership ahead of the 2027 FIFA presidential election, with Politico previously reporting that Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has emerged in internal discussions as a possible challenger, although his representatives have said he has “absolutely no ambition, no intention, no interest” in seeking the role. With FIFA’s member associations now facing a September 19 deadline to vote on the proposal, Thursday’s emergency meeting has demonstrated that European football is prepared to oppose the plan collectively, raising the prospect of an unprecedented split between FIFA and its largest continental confederation should the proposal move forward.
