Psychology says people who keep returning to Goa, Himachal, Kerala or same destination are not boring; it has everything to do with the human brain

Psychology says people who keep returning to Goa, Himachal, Kerala or same destination are not boring; it has everything to do with the human brain
Psychology says people who keep returning to the same place

We all know of some travellers who keep booking a holiday to Goa every December, spend every June in Himachal Pradesh, or return to Bali every summer, or Kerala in monsoon. To some, it might look strange. After all, the world is full of unexplored places. Why revisit the same destination when there are thousands waiting to be discovered? And here enters psychology. It has an interesting answer which is that humans don’t always travel to find something new. Often, they travel to reconnect, with a place, with old memories, and even with a previous self, a version that no longer exists.Returning to a favourite destination is a well-documented behaviour in tourism psychology and researchers often call it repeat visitation. Studies suggest it is driven by emotions, familiarity, identity and the brain’s preference for reducing uncertainty.Your brain tells you that you already know and loves that place

Planning a trip to a new destination requires a lot of planning and decisions. From planning itineraries to choosing hotels and food limitations, every unknown thing comes with a mental effort. But things are not so much traumatic when returning to a familiar destination. It dramatically reduces that cognitive load as you already have a list of the best café ready in your mind, you know the beaches and which local restaurant serves your favourite food. Now this is called reducing uncertaintyPsychologists refer to this as reducing uncertainty. The brain naturally favours environments where outcomes are predictable because they require less mental load. These also create a stronger sense of control. Research published in Annals of Tourism Research found that repeat visitors often choose familiar destinations because they perceive less risk of disappointment. It’s not just a place but a part of your identity

    Happy travellers

Maybe it was where you celebrated your 20th birthday or enjoyed your first trek. Perhaps it was the hill station where your parents took you every summer, or the beach where you learned to swim.Psychologists call this place attachment. Such places create an emotional bond people develop with specific locations. These places become more than tourist destinations; they become extensions of identity.Recent tourism research suggests that repeat travellers often revisit destinations because those places provide emotional comfort, and evoke meaningful memories. Nostalgia is a powerful

    Nostalgic

Have you ever walked into a familiar garden and remembered the same smell? It instantly connects you with a memory that you faintly recall. Now that’s nostalgia doing its work. Unlike simple memory, nostalgia combines emotions and personal meaning. It activates positive feelings while helping people cope with uncertainty.Several tourism studies have shown that nostalgia significantly increases travellers’ intention to revisit destinations. Previous happy experiences create emotional value that encourages people to return, often bringing children or friends along to recreate those memories.Far from boring

    Traveller packing

There’s a common belief that repeat travellers sacrifice adventure.Psychology suggests the opposite. During a first visit, travellers often race from one famous attraction to another, trying to “see everything.” Repeat visits remove that pressure.Instead of rushing through museums or monuments, visitors slow down. They spend mornings at neighbourhood cafés, explore lesser-known streets, revisit favourite walking trails or simply watch the sunset without checking their itinerary. One of psychology’s famous principles is the mere exposure effect. This applies to travel too.

    Travelling

Happiness of returning to the same cafe

The second visit to Himachal Pradesh, Goa or Ladakh often feels more enjoyable because travellers are no longer distracted by logistics. Familiar streets become comforting rather than confusing.Instead of worrying about maps or transport, travellers notice local conversations, hidden cafés and everyday life that they may have missed the first time. Travel experts have long argued that returning to a destination often produces more immersive experience than the initial visit. A 2026 study examining repeat visitors found that many returned because familiar destinations offered emotional restoration, calm and psychological comfort rather than novelty alone. And this is where travelling to the similar destination becomes emotionally restorativePerhaps that’s why some travellers keep going back to the same village in the Himalayas, the same coastal town in Goa or the same forest lodge year after year. It is because they’re returning to a place that has become part of who they are.
