In an oral history published by The History Channel oral history project, The Obama Years, Valerie Jarrett, one of Obama’s closest advisers, recalled that meetings were expected to wrap up before dinner because the President wanted to be home with Michelle, Malia and Sasha. She said he was willing to face criticism for skipping Washington’s evening social circuit because spending time with his family mattered more. Jarrett remembered Obama saying he was “prepared to take that hit” because being a husband and father was his priority, despite holding the world’s most powerful political office.

Michelle Obama has also shared how firmly the family protected dinnertime. Speaking at a Let’s Move! forum in 2012, the former First Lady revealed that, “At 6:30 we stop everything, we have dinner together.” She explained that even when Barack Obama travelled, his goal was to get back home in time for dinner whenever possible.According to Michelle, the family table became the one place where everyone slowed down enough to talk about their day. Those everyday conversations often revealed small details about school, friendships and life that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.
