Quote of the day by George Clooney: 'You're never as good as they say you are and you're never as bad as they say you are' when the 'Ocean's Eleven' icon explained why balance matters more than praise.

George Clooney is one of the last true movie stars. The man who parlayed a television career into one of the most elegant and purposeful film legacies of his generation, who has won the Academy Award, directed critically acclaimed films, made his Broadway debut at 63, and built a humanitarian record that rivals anything he has done on screen, is having the kind of year that arrives only after decades of doing the work with complete consistency. In April, he made his Broadway debut in ‘Good Night, and Good Luck,’ the stage adaptation of his own 2005 film, playing the legendary CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow to the strongest stage reviews of his career, according to the New York Times. In the same month, he received Film at Lincoln Center’s 51st Chaplin Award, with the organization’s president describing him as someone who brings a distinctive blend of intelligence, craft, and social conscience to everything he does. And next month, he will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice International Film Festival, responding to the news with characteristic self-awareness: “This festival is without question my favorite, and to be given the Golden Lion is a tremendous honor. It also probably means I’m old, but I’ll take it.” The man who has spent thirty years navigating the most destabilizing extremes of Hollywood opinion has always known the one thing that makes all of it manageable. The quote of the day reads, “You’re never as good as they say you are, and you’re never as bad as they say you are.”

Meaning of the quote of the day by George ClooneyGeorge Clooney said this in his celebrated “What I’ve Learned” profile interview, the kind that asks significant figures not what they have done but what they have understood. And what Clooney offered was one of the most practically useful pieces of self-knowledge available to anyone who lives and works in public. The entertainment industry, perhaps more than any other field, is defined by the volatility of opinion. Careers are made and destroyed in moments. A single performance can turn a struggling actor into a cultural phenomenon overnight, and the same thing can happen in reverse. The same person who is described as a genius in one profile is described as overrated in another. The language used about public figures swings from reverence to contempt with a speed and a completeness that bears no relationship to the actual, stable reality of the person being described.

Clooney is not telling people to ignore the feedback entirely. He is telling them where to stand in relation to it. Not inside it, where you are at the mercy of whatever the current assessment happens to be. Outside it, at a slight and deliberate remove, where you can take in what is useful and filter out what is merely loud. The person who believes fully in the praise becomes dependent on it and is therefore devastated when it stops. The person who believes fully in the criticism loses their footing entirely. The person who holds both lightly, who knows that neither extreme is the truth, is the only person who can keep working, keep improving, and keep showing up regardless of what the current narrative happens to be.For someone who has been through the entire cycle, who was declared a star and then declared a disappointment and then declared a comeback and then declared irrelevant and then celebrated as a legend, all in the span of a thirty-year career, this is not a theory. It is a survival strategy. And it is one that has worked with extraordinary consistency.

George Clooney’s early life: from Kentucky to ‘ER’

George Timothy Clooney was born on May 6, 1961, in Lexington, Kentucky, the son of television personality and journalist Nick Clooney and his wife Nina, according to IMDb. He grew up in a household where performance and public life were entirely normal, traveling frequently with his family and developing an ease in front of an audience that would eventually become one of his most defining professional qualities. He attended Northern Kentucky University before dropping out and moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting, supporting himself with a series of jobs, including selling women’s shoes, working in a tobacco field, and cutting and selling Christmas trees. His early career consisted of small television roles and guest appearances across the 1980s, with recurring roles in ‘The Facts of Life’ and ‘Roseanne’ giving him experience and exposure without quite breaking through. Everything changed in 1994 when he was cast as Dr. Doug Ross in ‘ER,’ the medical drama that became one of the most watched television programs in America and launched him into genuine mainstream stardom.

His transition from television to film was executed with remarkable taste and strategic intelligence. ‘From Dusk Till Dawn,’ ‘One Fine Day,’ and ‘The Peacemaker’ were followed by ‘Out of Sight’ in 1998, which introduced a cooler, more relaxed screen persona that suited him perfectly and established the template for everything that followed. ‘Three Kings’; ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’; ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ and its sequels; ‘Solaris’; ‘Good Night and Good Luck,’ which he also co-wrote and directed and for which he received Academy Award nominations for both acting and directing; ‘Syriana,’ for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor; ‘Michael Clayton’; ‘Up in the Air’; ‘The Descendants’; ‘Gravity’; and most recently ‘Jay Kelly,’ directed by Noah Baumbach, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, a performance widely described as one of the finest of his career.

He has been equally active as a director, producer, and humanitarian, co-founding the Not On Our Watch charity and being arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington in 2012 while protesting human rights violations. He married human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin in 2014, and the couple have twins, Ella and Alexander, born in 2017. He has spoken in interviews about the balance required to maintain a marriage and family life alongside two demanding careers, telling reporters simply, “You’re never gonna get it all right. No one does. But you have to go to work too, so you do the best you can.”The man who said you are never as good or as bad as they say you are has spent thirty years proving it from the inside. Broadway. Venice. The Golden Lion. The Chaplin Award. Three decades of not believing the best of the praise and not collapsing under the worst of it. That is the whole career, right there.
