6 DIY mosquito repellents that actually work at home
mosquito repellents that actually work at home

With the monsoon in full swing, mosquitoes have moved right back into the daily conversation, that familiar buzz near your ear at bedtime, the itchy bite you didn’t even feel happen, the constant hunt for the mosquito coil that’s somehow always missing. Before reaching for another can of spray, it’s worth knowing that a handful of home remedies genuinely hold up, cutting down mosquito activity using things most kitchens and gardens already have. They’re not miracle solutions and won’t replace a good repellent during peak season, but used consistently, they make a real difference. Here are six DIY options worth trying at home.

    Citronella and lemongrass oil

This is the old reliable of natural mosquito repellent, and it’s stuck around for a reason. The oil works by masking the scents, sweat, body heat, carbon dioxide that mosquitoes use to zero in on people. You can diffuse it, burn it as candles, ordioxide that drops with a carrier oil and dab it on exposed skin. The one thing to remember is that it doesn’t last as long as chemical repellents, so reapplying every couple of hours keeps it working through a full evening outdoors.

    Neem oil

Almost every Indian household has a neem oil story from a grandparent, and it turns out the reputation is deserved. Mixed with coconut oil and applied to the skin, it does a solid job of keeping mosquitoes away, thanks to its strong, bitter smell that mosquitoes tend to avoid. Neem oil on its own can be a bit harsh, so diluting it first is important. It’s also gentle enough for regular use, which makes it a good everyday option rather than something you save for emergencies.

    Garlic spray

Sounds strange, works surprisingly well. Crush a few cloves of garlic, mix the juice with water, roughly one part garlic to five parts water, and spray it around windows, doorways, or directly on skin. The sulfur compounds in garlic are what mosquitoes can’t stand, and while the smell lingers a bit, it’s about as cheap and accessible as repellents get. A quick spritz before sitting out on the balcony can noticeably cut down on bites.

    Peppermint and eucalyptus oil

Both of these have a sharp, clean scent that mosquitoes genuinely dislike, and they work fast when applied properly. Mix a few drops with water or a carrier oil and apply to exposed skin before heading outdoors. The catch is that the effect fades quicker than citronella, usually within half an hour to an hour, so it’s better suited to short outdoor stretches like an evening walk rather than an entire night by the window.

    Mosquito-repelling plants

Sometimes the easiest fix is what’s already growing in your garden or balcony pots. Marigold, basil, lemongrass, and rosemary are all known to keep mosquitoes at a distance, and planting a few near windows, doorways, or the balcony railing does double duty, they look good and quietly discourage mosquitoes from settling near entry points into the house. It’s a low-effort, long-term addition that pays off through the whole season.

    Camphor and diffuser blends

This one’s a household classic, light a piece of camphor in a closed room, leave it for 15 to 20 minutes, and the smoke does a surprisingly good job of clearing mosquitoes out before you walk back in. It works even better paired with an essential oil diffuser running a citronella-eucalyptus or citronella-lavender blend, especially in bedrooms right before sleep. It won’t keep the room mosquito-free all night, but it clears things out enough to fall asleep without swatting every five minutes.

    Disclaimer:

This article is for general informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical or pest-control advice. Natural repellents typically offer shorter and less consistent protection than approved insect repellents, especially in areas with high mosquito-borne disease risk such as dengue, malaria, or chikungunya. Individuals with sensitive skin, allergies, young children, or pregnant women should do a patch test or consult a doctor before using essential oils or other home remedies directly on skin.
