More than 170 migrants were rescued on Tuesday after a small boat attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the UK caught fire, prompting a major cross-border rescue operation, BBC reported.French authorities said the vessel’s engine caught fire before its “structural integrity deteriorated very rapidly”, forcing emergency responders from both France and the UK to intervene.The French maritime prefecture of the Channel and North Sea said 173 people were eventually rescued and brought ashore at Boulogne-sur-Mer. Eleven migrants sustained minor injuries, while no fatalities have been reported.
Migrants initially refused rescue, say French authorities
According to French officials, the boat departed northern France on Monday night. During the overnight journey, five people were rescued after requiring emergency assistance, but the remaining passengers reportedly declined help despite offers from French patrol boats.Authorities said such refusals are common among migrants determined to reach Britain, adding that emergency teams avoided boarding the overcrowded vessel because of concerns it could become unstable.Rescue efforts intensified only after the fire broke out and the boat rapidly became unsafe. The operation involved French rescue vessels, UK Border Force boats, the RNLI Eastbourne lifeboat, firefighters, police officers, interpreters and medical teams.French prosecutors have launched an investigation into the incident. An Egyptian national has been taken into police custody in connection with the case, although authorities have not disclosed the specific allegations.
UK says incident shows dangers of Channel crossings
The UK government said the Border Security Command was alerted after the boat got into distress in French waters. British vessels assisted the rescue before those on board were returned to France.Border Security Minister Anna Turley said the incident highlighted the risks of illegal Channel crossings and blamed criminal smuggling networks operating along the route.“It shows the dangers of these illegal crossings and the ruthless gangs behind them,” she said, adding that the government was stepping up action against trafficking networks.A UK government spokesperson also said the rescue underlined the “terrible dangers” of small-boat crossings and reiterated that authorities were working closely with France to prevent such journeys.
Political debate over migration intensifies
The rescue comes as immigration remains a major political issue in Britain. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp criticised French authorities, claiming police were not doing enough to stop boats leaving the French coast.Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also reacted to the incident, saying stronger measures were needed to stop Channel crossings. Earlier this week, his party proposed deploying the Royal Navy to deter migrant boats under its “Operation Fortress” plan.Prime Minister Andy Burnham, meanwhile, said this week his government would remain “relentless” in tackling illegal migration while also expanding safe and legal routes for those seeking protection.
Channel crossings remain a key challenge
The latest rescue follows one of the busiest periods for Channel crossings this year. UK authorities said 752 migrants arrived in Britain in small boats last Wednesday, the highest daily total of 2026 so far.Most crossings take place during the summer, when calmer weather makes the journey more feasible. Despite the recent surge, Home Office data shows overall crossings this year remain lower than during the same period last year.Earlier this year, Britain and France signed a three-year £662 million agreement to strengthen border enforcement, including increased beach patrols, drones, helicopters and additional measures targeting people-smuggling networks operating along the Channel coast.
