When Gautam Gambhir landed in Colombo with the Indian team on Tuesday, he did so carrying a contradiction that increasingly defines his tenure as India’s head coach. Few Indian cricketers have spoken more passionately about how sacred Test cricket is to them. Few modern Indian batters built their reputation on tougher overseas assignments quite like Gambhir did.He scored a marathon 137 in Napier to save a Test in New Zealand in 2009, made a century in Wellington and played one of the grittiest innings of his career in Cape Town in 2011 with a swollen hand, helping India secure a series draw in South Africa.Yet, two years into his coaching tenure, the format he values most has become his biggest Achilles heel. If Gambhir’s white-ball record has largely justified his appointment, his Test results have largely generated some very uncomfortable questions.More importantly, with India now staring at the prospect of missing a second consecutive World Test Championship (WTC) final under him, the two-Test series against Sri Lanka beginning on Aug 15 could become the most important assignment of his coaching career.The contrast between Gambhir’s fortunes across formats is striking. In white-ball cricket, his fingerprints are unmistakable. India won the 2025 Champions Trophy and followed it up with the 2026 T20 World Cup title. Gambhir pushed a philosophy built around relentless aggression rather than stat-padding and wicket-preservation.The approach reached its peak during India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, when the team blasted 250-plus totals in both the semifinal and the final. As coach, he has consistently shown a preference for multi-skilled cricketers. In limited-overs cricket, where batting depth can often be the difference between victory and defeat, that approach has largely worked. In Tests, that approach has not worked.His preference for bowling allrounders and lower-order batting depth has sometimes come at the expense of specialists.The most cited example remains Kuldeep Yadav’s inconsistent and restricted role despite being one of India’s most potent wicket-taking options. The results have reflected the uncertainty. After beginning with a comfortable 2-0 series win over Bangladesh, India suffered a humiliating 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand. An even bigger blow followed when they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 in Australia.There was some recovery in England, where a young Indian side under new captain Shubman Gill drew 2-2. But that goodwill quickly evaporated after a 2-0 home defeat to South Africa on turning pitches exposed India’s long-standing issues against quality spin. The timing couldn’t be worse. A second World Test Championship cycle threatens to slip away without India featuring in the final. For a nation that made the first two WTC finals and views itself as one of the format’s standard-bearers, that would represent a significant regression.Compounding the pressure is the perception that everyone around Gambhir has already paid a price for poor performances.Most of the support staff that began this journey with him are now gone. Assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, along with fielding coach T Dilip, have all exited. The departures have created the impression that lieutenants have effectively served as scapegoats for India’s failures.If the coaching staff has already been reshaped, the obvious question becomes: how much longer can Gambhir remain insulated if results don’t improve? Officially, the BCCI continues to back him. Publicly, there has been no indication that a change is imminent. Yet Indian cricket rarely operates in a vacuum.Looming in the background is VVS Laxman, currently heading the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. Laxman’s reputation within Indian cricket remains exceptional and his stock has only risen after India’s young side completed a 3-0 T20I sweep of Zimbabwe recently.Sources suggest that while Gambhir is not facing an immediate threat, a poor tour of Sri Lanka could significantly alter the conversation. There are, however, significant factors. A former cricketer close to Gambhir believes the criticism often ignores the reality of a team undergoing major transition. “You must understand that Gambhir’s job hasn’t been easy so far. This has been a team in transition,” the former cricketer said.Former India opener and UAE coach Lalchand Rajput feels the calls for drastic action are premature. “I still feel that as a coach, there will be ups and downs. You can’t be winning all the time. The Indian team is going through a rebuilding process. And when the team is going through it, you have to give more time to the players and the coach,” Rajput told TOI. “Greats like Rohit and Kohli have quit two formats, while India have a new T20 captain in Shreyas Iyer, and tried several new players in the T20 series in England,” Rajput further justified.Former India coach Sandeep Patil believes India’s problems run deeper than just the head coach. “The Sri Lanka tour is crucial for everyone, why only Gambhir? If Gambhir has failed to perform, so have the players. It is not right to pick on one guy,” Patil said. Patil was particularly critical of India’s preparation methods. “We were not able to play spinners and lost the home series against New Zealand because they came prepared. They practised on turning wickets. Whereas, our team was practising at the CoE on good tracks,” he said.
