Yet some of the world’s wealthiest and most influential families are making a different investment. Instead of focusing only on technology, parents like Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and members of US President Donald Trump‘s family are encouraging their children to learn Mandarin, the world’s most spoken language. But what does this choice mean?
Why Mandarin?
Mandarin is the native language of nearly one billion people and is spoken by around 1.18 billion people worldwide when second-language speakers are included, making it the most spoken language on the planet. As China continues to play a major role in global manufacturing, technology, trade and innovation, many educators and business leaders believe that the ability to communicate in Mandarin offers opportunities that extend well beyond language itself.

Mark Zuckerberg’s interest in Mandarin is well known. He began learning the language in 2010, partly to communicate with his wife Priscilla Chan’s Chinese-speaking family. In 2014, he surprised audiences by conducting a lengthy question-and-answer session at Beijing’s Tsinghua University almost entirely in Mandarin.The interest has extended to his family as well. According to reports, his daughters Maxima, August and Aurelia are learning Mandarin because Zuckerberg wants them to understand both the language and Chinese culture from an early age.

While Musk did not elaborate on the curriculum, the decision aligns with Tesla’s significant presence in China, one of the company’s largest markets. During a visit to Beijing, Musk was accompanied by his son, further highlighting the family’s engagement with China.

Perhaps one of the earliest examples is Arabella Kushner, daughter of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. She reportedly began learning Mandarin at just 18 months of age. In 2017, she attracted global attention after greeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Mandarin and performing a Chinese song and poetry during his visit to the United States. Experts later described such moments as examples of how language can also serve as a bridge for diplomacy and cultural understanding.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his former wife MacKenzie Scott reportedly introduced their four children to a range of educational experiences, including Mandarin lessons and Singapore Math. Why this goes beyond business
These billionaires are not seeing Mandarin simply as a tool for career advancement. Kerry Brown, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College London, told ABC News that China’s position as the world’s second-largest economy makes learning Mandarin a practical investment for anyone interested in global business and technology. He noted that many influential figures believe economic engagement with China will remain important for decades.At the same time, academics argue that language is inseparable from culture. Ning Zhang, Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University of Adelaide, said AI may translate words, but it cannot replace the human relationships, cultural understanding and face-to-face communication that language learning develops. According to her, learning Mandarin is about understanding people- not simply converting one language into another.
What parents can learn from this trend
This doesn’t mean that every child must learn Mandarin. Instead, this trend highlights a broader picture. In the age of technology, human abilities- such as communication, adaptability, and cultural awareness can become even more valuable than technical skills. For these influential families, the reason behind having their kids learn Mandarin is not being done for the sake of extracurricular activity, instead- it’s like an investment in helping their children understand what’s going to hold more value in the future. For them, global connections will matter as much as technical knowledge.
