Don’t bin your old T-shirts: 6 easy DIY ideas to give them a new life
Don’t bin your old T-shirts: 6 easy DIY ideas to give them a new life

There’s always that one drawer, the one crammed with T-shirts too faded, too stretched, or too sentimental to wear out of the house anymore, but somehow still too good to actually throw away. Most of them end up sitting there for years, doing absolutely nothing, until a closet-cleaning day finally forces the question of what to do with them. The good news is that old cotton T-shirts are genuinely useful material once you stop thinking of them as clothing, soft, stretchy, and easy to cut into just about anything. Instead of adding to the landfill pile, here are six simple ways to actually put them to use again.

    No-sew tote bag

This is the classic starting point, and it genuinely takes about ten minutes from start to finish. Lay the shirt flat, cut off both sleeves along the seam, then cut a wider scoop into the neckline so it forms comfortable carrying handles. Flip the shirt inside out, cut two-inch fringe strips along the bottom hem, and tie each pair of strips together in a tight knot to seal the base shut. Turn it right-side out and you’ve got a sturdy, washable bag, and picking a shirt with a graphic you actually like turns it into something you’ll genuinely want to carry around rather than just a leftover rag with handles.

T-shirt yarn for crochet or braiding

This is the one trick that unlocks almost every other project on this list. Lay the shirt flat and cut it into continuous strips, about two to three inches wide, working your way up from the bottom in a spiral so you end up with one long, unbroken length rather than a pile of separate pieces. Stretching each strip firmly afterwards makes the raw edges curl inward, turning ordinary jersey fabric into something that behaves remarkably like actual yarn. Once you’ve got a stash of it, you can crochet it into coasters, braid it into bracelets, or knot it into a small plant hanger.

    Braided dog tug toy

If you’ve got a dog at home, this is one of the more genuinely rewarding uses for a stack of old tees. Cut a few shirts into t-shirt yarn using the method above, then braid three strands together the same way you’d braid a friendship bracelet or a lanyard, knotting off both ends securely. It’s worth being honest that plain t-shirt fabric is softer than proper rope toys and may not hold up to a determined, heavy chewer, so it works best for gentler tug-of-war and fetch rather than as an unsupervised chew toy for a dog that destroys everything in minutes.

Memory pillow from a graphic tee

For shirts carrying real sentimental weight, an old band tee, a college fest shirt, something from a trip you don’t want to forget, turning the print itself into a small cushion keeps the memory somewhere you’ll actually see it. Cut matching squares from the front and back of the shirt, centring the graphic on one side, then sew or glue around three edges, leaving one side open to stuff with filling before closing it up. It turns a shirt that was just sitting folded in a drawer into something that actually lives on your bed or sofa.

    Soft cleaning rags

This is the least glamorous option here, but it’s arguably the most genuinely useful one. Cotton T-shirt fabric is lint-free, soft enough not to scratch glass or wooden surfaces, and absorbent enough to handle spills and general wipe-downs far better than paper towels. Cutting a worn-out shirt into a handful of squares gives you a stack of reusable cleaning cloths that can be washed and used again and again, quietly saving both money and waste every time you’d otherwise reach for a paper towel instead.

    Framed graphic wall art

For a shirt with a print worth keeping but a body that’s too worn to wear, cutting out just the graphic and stretching it over a small canvas, or framing it inside a shadow box, turns it into a small piece of wall art instead. It’s a genuinely nice way to hang onto a design you loved, a concert tee, an old brand logo, without the shirt itself taking up drawer space it no longer earns. Grouped together, a handful of these can turn into a surprisingly personal little gallery wall.

    Old shirt, new purpose

None of these six ideas need much more than a pair of scissors, a bit of patience, and a willingness to see an old T-shirt as material rather than trash. Whether it ends up as a market tote, a chew toy, or a small square of framed nostalgia on your wall, giving it a second purpose is a small, easy habit that adds up over a drawer full of shirts you were never going to wear again anyway.DisclaimerThis article is intended for general informational purposes only. When making pet toys, supervise your dog during play and inspect toys regularly for wear, replacing them if they start to fray or come apart, as small torn pieces can pose a choking or ingestion risk.
